1. Treat moth repellent exposure as urgent
Mothballs and some moth-repellent products can contain naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene, chemicals that are dangerous when a cat eats them, breathes concentrated vapors, or gets residue on fur and then grooms. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises prompt consultation after a suspected exposure; waiting for symptoms can lose time. A single product may be more hazardous to cats because of their small size and grooming behavior.
If you see a cat with a mothball, an opened package, a treated garment, or a strong moth-repellent odor, move the cat away from the source and secure the product. Do not assume a product is harmless because it was labeled for closets, storage, or household pest control. The package and ingredient list are central to the poison consultation, so keep them with you.
Mothballs may contain naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene, and both require an immediate poison or veterinary call. Report the label, route, cat?s weight, and time even if the cat appears normal. Report other potentially exposed pets or people.
2. Identify every possible route
Ingestion is the clearest route, but it is not the only one. Cats may chew a mothball, lick powder or flakes, groom residue from a paw or coat, inhale vapors in a closed storage area, or lie on textiles stored with repellent. A product scattered around a room can also be hidden under furniture, where a curious cat finds it before a person notices.
Check the immediate area without putting yourself at risk: count missing items, look for torn packaging, note the product name, active ingredient, concentration, and estimated amount, and record the time exposure may have occurred. Bring the original container or take sharp photographs of all label panels. Never rely on color, odor, or the word βmothballβ to identify the chemical.
Exposure can occur through swallowing, residue licking, grooming contaminated fur, or concentrated vapor. Preserve the package and count missing pieces, but do not delay the call to establish the exact route. Inspect textiles and footwear for transferred residue.
3. Call for poison or veterinary guidance now
Call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, or Pet Poison Helpline immediately after suspected exposure. Give the catβs weight, age, current signs, product information, route, amount if known, and time. The professional may direct you to emergency care even when the cat currently looks normal. Follow that advice; some toxic effects are delayed and need examination or laboratory monitoring.
Do not spend the call trying to prove that the cat swallowed a piece. The purpose is to give the expert the best facts available and receive time-sensitive instructions. Put the cat in a ventilated carrier or safe room away from fumes while you call. If transport is recommended, take the package, label photographs, and any product fragments in a sealed container kept away from the cat.
A poison specialist can triage with the active ingredient, concentration, possible amount, cat?s weight, and earliest contact time. Uncertainty is expected and should be reported plainly. Update the specialist if signs change during transport.
4. Do not induce vomiting or use home remedies
Do not induce vomiting in a cat unless a veterinarian or poison expert specifically tells you to do so. Hydrogen peroxide, salt, oil, milk, activated charcoal, food, and other home remedies can cause additional injury, aspiration, or delay appropriate treatment. Cats are not small dogs, and an online remedy is not a substitute for a product-specific toxicology assessment.
Do not force water, food, or medication into a distressed cat. If powder or residue is visibly on the coat, call first for instructions before bathing; the advice may depend on the substance and the catβs condition. Avoid inhaling vapors yourself and keep children and other pets out of the area. The priority is controlled separation, accurate information, and expert direction.
Peroxide, salt, oil, milk, food, and human medicine can worsen a cat?s condition or cause aspiration. Keep the cat safely contained and await product-specific instructions. Forced dosing can create aspiration or bite risk.
5. Recognize emergency warning signs
Moth repellent toxicosis can involve vomiting, drooling, nausea, lethargy, weakness, poor coordination, tremors, seizures, pale or brownish gums, breathing changes, dark urine, or collapse. Naphthalene can damage red blood cells, and both common ingredients can create serious illness. Any seizure, breathing difficulty, collapse, marked weakness, or rapidly worsening behavior warrants immediate emergency veterinary transport rather than continued observation at home.
A cat that seems quiet or hides after an exposure should not be dismissed as merely frightened. Note whether it is walking normally, responding, breathing comfortably, and using the litter box, but do not delay the poison call to collect a perfect record. If the cat vomits, do not put fingers in its mouth or attempt to retrieve material from the throat; protect the airway and leave safely.
Seizures, tremors, collapse, breathing difficulty, marked weakness, or pale or brown gums demand emergency transport. Delayed illness is possible, so early normal behavior does not clear the exposure. Call ahead so the emergency team can prepare.
6. What the clinic may need to do
Veterinary treatment depends on the ingredient, route, timing, signs, and examination. The clinic may assess breathing, temperature, hydration, neurologic status, and blood values, then provide decontamination or supportive care when appropriate. There is no safe universal at-home protocol. Early professional guidance helps the team decide whether monitoring, hospitalization, seizure control, oxygen support, or other treatment is needed.
Bring all relevant evidence: package, active ingredient, estimated number missing, photographs of the storage area, and a list of any other chemicals nearby. Tell the team if the cat may have been exposed more than once or if another pet was in the same room. Accurate history changes treatment decisions more than a guess about whether the cat βseemed fineβ at first.
A clinic may assess blood values, breathing, neurologic status, and organ effects, then choose decontamination, oxygen, fluids, or seizure control. Bring the package and scene photographs. Fading odor does not mean toxic risk has passed.
7. Remove the source without spreading it
After the cat is safely separated and experts have been contacted, ventilate the area if it can be done safely, using open doors or windows rather than blowing fumes through the home. Wear gloves when collecting solid products and place them in a sealed container away from pets. Follow product-label disposal directions and local hazardous-waste guidance; do not leave moth repellents in open trash where animals can reach them.
Wash hands after handling packages and inspect nearby bedding, closets, luggage, and stored seasonal clothing. A contaminated textile may need product-specific cleaning guidance. Do not simply mask the odor with fragrance, because perfume does not remove the chemical. Keep the cat out until the source and residue have been addressed and the veterinary or poison expert says the situation is safe.
Do not shake, sweep, or vacuum loose material into the air. Isolate the cat and get poison-service advice on ventilation, fabric cleaning, and re-entry. Prevent residue from reaching the carrier or hands.
8. Prevent the next exposure
The safest prevention is to avoid loose mothballs and place any pesticide product only where pets cannot access it or its vapors. Consider nonchemical storage methods such as clean, sealed containers and laundering or freezing susceptible fabrics when appropriate. Read labels every time; product formulas and instructions can differ, and βnaturalβ pest-control products can still create hazards for cats.
Store original packaging with the product, never in an unmarked jar or bag. Tell guests, cleaners, and family members that moth repellents belong outside the catβs reach and should not be placed in shared closets or under furniture. Post the poison and emergency-veterinary numbers where everyone can find them. Fast, informed action is the essential first aid for a possible toxin exposure.
Avoid loose mothballs and keep pesticides in original labeled containers outside living areas. Sealed garment bags, laundering, cleaning, and airtight bins can reduce moth damage without loose toxicants. Review the storage rule with every household member. If a product has been used already, inspect storage areas promptly and discard unsafe access rather than assuming a closed door protected the cat.
