They eat seeds when other foods aren't available. Their primary diet is fruit, nectar, flowers, young leaves, bark, insects, and the seeds of grasses. Seeds are a fallback food, not the foundation. A captive parrot fed only seeds is eating a fraction of the nutritional diversity it needs, every single day, for its entire life.

What an All-Seed Diet Is Missing

Vitamin A (beta-carotene) deficiency is the most common and most serious consequence of seed-only diets. Seeds contain virtually no vitamin A. Deficiency causes: chronic respiratory infections (thickening and infection of the mucous membranes that line the airways), poor feather quality, weakness, and oral plaques (cheesy material visible in the mouth or throat). Seeds are also calorie-dense and high in fat -- a bird that eats primarily seeds (especially sunflower seeds, which are among the highest-fat seeds available) is consuming the avian equivalent of a diet of mainly potato chips. What a Balanced Parrot Diet Actually Looks Like

Offer pellets as 60-70% of daily intake. Transitioning a Seed-Addicted Bird to Pellets

Parrots imprint strongly on foods learned in early life. A bird that has eaten seeds for 5 years doesn't recognize pellets as food. Don't simply remove seeds and offer pellets -- this can cause a bird to starve rather than try unfamiliar food, especially in cockatiels and budgies. Instead: offer pellets alongside seeds initially, gradually increasing the ratio of pellets to seeds over weeks. Many birds prefer to try new foods when they see their owner eating it (mock eating in front of the bird). Crumbling pellets over a favorite food can bridge the gap.

The process takes weeks to months. Weighing the bird weekly (a 10-15% weight loss means insufficient food intake -- too fast a transition) allows safe monitoring. Some birds never fully convert from seeds; even a partial transition to 50% pellets is a meaningful health improvement.

Toxic Foods: What to Keep Away From All Birds

Avocado (persin in the flesh, pit, and skin causes cardiac failure in birds), chocolate (theobromine toxicity), alcohol, caffeine, onions and garlic (hemolytic anemia), fruit pits and apple seeds (cyanogenic compounds), and xylitol (in sugar-free gum and some nut butters).
