Birds bite to communicate: they bite when scared, overstimulated, territorial, or when previous biting successfully ended unwanted interaction. The solution is learning to read the early warning signals (feather fluffing, eye pinning, leaning away, rapid breathing) and stopping interaction before the bird escalates to a bite. Punishment for biting does not work -- it increases fear and biting frequency. The correct response to a bite is a neutral, calm reaction followed by identifying what triggered it.

Biting is communication, not aggression

A biting bird is not "mean" or defective -- it is communicating that something is wrong. Birds that bite chronically have almost always had their earlier, softer communications ignored until they learned that biting was the only signal that reliably stopped unwanted interaction. Understanding this reframes the problem: instead of punishing the bite, you prevent it by learning what the bird was trying to say before the bite happened.

Common bite triggers: being approached while eating (food guarding), being handled during hormonal surges (usually spring, characterized by regurgitation, crouching postures, and increased aggression), being overtired, cage-territorial behavior when a hand enters the cage, redirected aggression (the bird is scared of something else and bites the nearest available thing), and fear of a specific person, object, or situation.

Reading early warning signals

Birds telegraph discomfort clearly before they bite. The sequence from earliest to most severe: feathers flattened tight against the body (not relaxed fluffing -- tight, compressed), eye pinning (rapid dilation and constriction of the pupil), tail fanning, leaning away or stepping back, lunging without contact, warning nip, full bite. Most owners notice only the lunge or nip and miss the earlier signals. Watching for tight feathers and pupil changes -- both visible from a few feet away -- allows you to reduce pressure before escalation.

What not to do

Never yell at or physically punish a biting bird. Raised voices and sudden movements increase arousal and fear, which increases the likelihood of future biting. "Earthquake" technique (rapidly shaking the hand a biting bird is perched on) was once recommended; it is now understood to damage trust and increase stress without addressing the underlying cause. Dropping a biting bird (allowing it to fall to reduce biting behavior) is similarly counterproductive -- it creates a fear association with stepping up, which makes future handling more difficult.

Never push into a bite. Instinct says to pull back when bitten; birds interpret the pull as prey fleeing and often bite harder. Instead, push gently toward the bite -- most birds release when the resistance they expect (prey fleeing) does not occur.

Practical training techniques

Target training redirects a bird's focus and provides a non-contact way to interact. Teach the bird to touch a small stick or dowel (the target) with its beak in exchange for a treat. Build "step up" on cue, always with a treat reward. Birds that are engaged in trained behaviors for food rewards are not simultaneously biting -- the incompatible behavior principle. Once a bird is trained and receiving consistent positive reinforcement, biting frequency drops significantly because the bird has better ways to interact with you.

If a bird bites during cage interaction specifically: respect cage territory. Ask the bird to step out of the cage onto a neutral perch rather than asking it to step up inside its cage -- many birds are significantly less territorial once outside. Only put your hand in the cage to service it when the bird is out of the cage.

Hormonal biting

Spring triggers hormonal surges in many parrots that increase territorial and reproductive behavior, including increased biting. This is temporary -- typically 4-8 weeks. Management during this period: reduce handling interactions that trigger the behavior, avoid stroking the back or under the wings (sexually stimulating areas), and provide enrichment and foraging activities to redirect energy. Hormonal biting is not a character change; it resolves when the hormonal cycle ends.
