Prevention is the real miracle treatment in parrot toxicology. The best response to many hazards is making sure the bird never shares the air, surface, or food in the first place.

A parrot that seems only mildly affected can still be in real danger. Their small size and respiratory efficiency leave very little room for a wait-and-see approach.


Parrots are among the most toxicologically sensitive pets kept in homes. Their small size, rapid metabolism, and efficient respiratory systems mean that substances harmless or mildly irritating to dogs and cats can kill a parrot within minutes. The list of hazards goes beyond the commonly cited nonstick cookware to include foods, plants, cleaning products, candles, and materials in the home environment that most owners never consider dangerous. Knowing this list and eliminating hazards is the foundation of parrot safety.

PTFE and Airborne Toxins: The Fastest Killers

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, brand name Teflon) fumes from overheated nonstick cookware are responsible for more unexpected parrot deaths than any other single toxin. When nonstick pans are heated above 530 degrees F (which occurs during high-heat cooking or unattended preheating), PTFE releases gases that cause acute hemorrhagic pulmonary edema in birds within 5 to 60 minutes. Dead parrots are found on the cage floor; there is no antidote, no time for veterinary intervention in most cases. Eliminate all nonstick cookware, bakeware, and appliances with nonstick coatings (including air fryers, waffle irons, self-cleaning oven cycles) from homes with birds.

Other airborne toxins: aerosol cooking sprays, scented candles (paraffin and fragrance), air fresheners and plug-in diffusers, incense, tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide from poorly ventilated heaters, and Febreze-type fabric sprays. Substitute: stainless steel or cast iron cookware, unscented candles in other rooms, and direct air freshening through open windows.

Food Toxins

Avocado (all parts -- flesh, skin, pit, leaves) contains persin, a fungicidal toxin that causes myocardial necrosis (heart muscle death) in birds at very small doses; clinical signs (weakness, lethargy, respiratory distress) develop within 24 to 48 hours. There is no antidote; mortality is high. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, causing cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death. Onions and garlic cause hemolytic anemia in birds. Alcohol: even small amounts cause liver and brain damage. Fruit seeds (apple, pear, cherry, peach, plum pits) contain amygdalin that metabolizes to cyanide; remove pits and seeds before offering fruit. Rhubarb (oxalic acid) and mushrooms are additional hazards.

Household Plants

Toxic plants in parrot households: philodendron, pothos, dieffenbachia, caladium (all aroids -- calcium oxalate crystals causing oral and GI irritation); azalea and rhododendron (grayanotoxins causing cardiac and neurological effects); oleander (cardiac glycosides); poinsettia (mild irritant, unlikely to cause severe toxicity in the amounts parrots access); yew (highly cardiotoxic).

Safe cage-accessible plants: spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum), African violet, impatiens, and most herbs (basil, parsley, cilantro, dill). Always verify any plant before allowing parrot access.

Heavy Metals

Lead and zinc poisoning are serious concerns in birds. Sources: galvanized cage wire (zinc), certain painted surfaces (lead in pre-1978 paint), stained glass windows, fishing weights, certain jewelry, and bells with clappers. Signs of heavy metal toxicity: weakness, ataxia, regurgitation, seizures, and green or black urine. Treatment: DMSA chelation (meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) under veterinary supervision; blood heavy metal levels confirm diagnosis.

If You Suspect Toxin Exposure

Move the bird to fresh air immediately. Contact your avian veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) immediately. Do not induce vomiting -- birds do not vomit effectively and attempts at induction cause additional stress and aspiration risk. For airborne fume exposure, the window of survival is minutes; prioritize fresh air and emergency transport over phone calls.
