Medical Causes Must Come First

Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) is a viral infection (circovirus) that causes feather abnormalities, feather loss, and beak deformity -- the feathers fall out rather than being plucked, and the condition is progressive and potentially fatal. Diagnosis via PCR blood test or feather follicle biopsy. There is no cure; management focuses on supportive care and preventing transmission.

Bacterial and yeast skin infections cause itching that drives overpreening. Giardia (intestinal parasite) is associated with dry, itchy skin in cockatiels and causes feather damage along accessible body areas. Allergies -- to food, environmental allergens, or the materials in cage components -- cause skin irritation. Behavioral modification specifically avoids reinforcing plucking with attention -- even distressed attention. Instead, redirect to an incompatible behavior (step up, play, foraging) and reward that behavior. This requires consistency over weeks to months.
