Avocado is the most dangerous common food for birds -- the persin toxin in avocado flesh, skin, and pit causes cardiac failure and death within 24-48 hours. Other confirmed toxic foods: chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onions, garlic, fruit pits and apple seeds (cyanide compounds), and xylitol (artificial sweetener). Salt is harmful in more than trace amounts. Many bird deaths from food occur within hours, so if you suspect ingestion of any toxic food, contact an avian veterinarian immediately.

Why birds are especially vulnerable to food toxins

Birds have high metabolic rates and small body masses -- a 100-gram cockatiel processes toxins proportionally much faster than a 10-kilogram dog would. A quantity of chocolate that causes mild illness in a medium-sized dog can kill a parakeet in hours. Additionally, birds often show no visible symptoms until a toxin has caused significant organ damage, because they instinctively hide signs of weakness. By the time a bird is visibly ill from poisoning, the situation is often critical. Prevention is the only reliable strategy.

Avocado: the most critical bird toxin

Avocado contains persin, a fungicidal toxin present in the fruit flesh, skin, pit, and leaves of the plant. In birds, persin causes cardiac muscle damage, respiratory distress, weakness, and death, typically within 24-48 hours of ingestion. Even small amounts of avocado are dangerous. Guacamole, avocado-containing prepared foods, and dishes cooked with avocado are all dangerous. This toxicity applies to all avocado varieties -- ripe, unripe, and cooked. There is no safe dose for birds.

Chocolate and caffeine

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both methylxanthines that birds cannot metabolize at the rate mammals can. Symptoms of theobromine toxicity in birds include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmia. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain higher theobromine concentrations than milk chocolate, but all chocolate is unsafe. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and any caffeinated food or beverage cause similar toxicity -- hyperactivity, heart arrhythmia, and seizures in birds. There is no safe amount.

Onions, garlic, and alliums

Onions and garlic contain sulfur compounds (n-propyl disulfide and thiosulfate) that damage red blood cells in birds, causing hemolytic anemia. Cooked forms are also toxic. Symptoms include weakness, lethargy, difficulty breathing, and dark-colored urine. Garlic powder, onion powder, and foods seasoned with alliums are all unsafe. Chives and leeks belong to the same family and carry the same risk.

Fruit pits and apple seeds

The pits of stone fruits -- cherries, peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines -- contain amygdalin, which metabolizes to cyanide. The flesh of these fruits is safe (and nutritious); only the pit is dangerous. Apple seeds also contain amygdalin. Remove pits and seeds before offering any stone fruit or apple to a bird. Grape seeds and raisin consumption in large amounts has been associated with kidney toxicity in some species, though research on birds specifically is less extensive than for dogs.

Alcohol and xylitol

Alcohol causes severe neurological effects, respiratory depression, and death in birds even in very small amounts. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candy, peanut butter, and many baked goods, causes severe hypoglycemia and liver failure in many species. Never offer sugar-free products to birds. Check ingredient labels of any processed food before sharing with a bird.

Salt and high-sodium foods

Birds' kidneys process sodium differently from mammals and are far less tolerant of high salt intake. Chips, pretzels, crackers, processed meats, canned foods, and fast food are all inappropriately high in sodium for birds. Small tastes of lightly salted food are unlikely to cause acute toxicity, but chronic exposure to salty food causes kidney damage. When in doubt about a human food, offer only plain, unprocessed versions without salt, sauce, or seasoning.

Teflon and cooking fumes

Not a food toxin, but worth including: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating on non-stick cookware releases toxic fumes when overheated (above approximately 500 degrees F). These fumes cause rapid death in birds within minutes. Never use Teflon-coated cookware in a home with pet birds, or ensure the kitchen is completely isolated from the bird's environment with sealed air circulation. Self-cleaning oven cycles also produce toxic fumes. This is one of the leading causes of sudden bird death in domestic settings.
