Gouldian finches (Erythrura gouldiae) are arguably the most visually spectacular bird in aviculture -- adult males display an almost impossibly vivid combination of scarlet or black head, purple breast, yellow belly, and brilliant green back. Wild populations in Australia's tropical north have declined severely (estimated fewer than 2,500 individuals remain in some surveys) due to habitat destruction and inappropriate fire management; the species is largely sustained by captive breeding. They are delicate birds with high baseline sensitivity to temperature fluctuations, parasitic infection, and nutritional deficiency. Keepers in temperate climates maintain Gouldians in heated aviaries or bird rooms year-round, targeting 75-85 degrees F with reliable heating backups. A temperature controller with both heating and cooling capability (cooling for summer heat events) gives the most precise control. Never house Gouldians in outdoor aviaries without supplemental heating unless the climate genuinely mimics northern Australian conditions.

Air Sac Mites: The Disease Every Gouldian Keeper Faces

Sternostoma tracheacolum (air sac mite, tracheal mite) is present in most captive Gouldian finch populations and activated to clinical disease by stress, temperature fluctuations, and suboptimal nutrition. Mites live in the trachea, air sacs, and lungs. Clinical signs: tail bobbing (visible respiratory effort at rest), voice changes (squeaky or absent voice -- classic sign in Gouldians), open-mouth breathing in advanced cases, and progressive weight loss. Heavy infestations are fatal.

Treatment: ivermectin applied topically at the back of the neck (1 drop of 1% ivermectin diluted 1:1 with propylene glycol, applied directly to skin -- not feathers -- approximately 0.1-0.2 mL per adult bird; exact dose should be confirmed with an avian veterinarian given the small margin for error with ivermectin in small birds). Repeat in 10-14 days. Treat all birds in the aviary simultaneously. Nutrition: Seeds Plus Greens Plus Livefood

Gouldian finches are poor parents compared to other Estrildid finches. Egg abandonment, chick desertion, and inadequate chick feeding are common.
