The Short Answer

A proper bird cage setup includes: a cage large enough for full wing extension and horizontal movement, perches of varying diameter and texture placed at different heights, food and water positioned to avoid droppings contamination, and placement at eye level away from kitchens, drafts, and direct sun. The cage is where your bird spends most of its life -- layout directly affects physical health (foot health, exercise opportunity) and psychological wellbeing (security, stimulation). Don't buy the smallest cage that fits; buy the largest cage your space and budget allows.

Cage Size: The Non-Negotiable Starting Point

The cage must allow the bird to fully extend both wings simultaneously without touching the bars, and to move at least a few feet horizontally between perches. Bar spacing is as critical as overall size: too wide and the bird's head can get trapped (causing strangulation or neck injury); too narrow and the bird can't see out or grip the bars for climbing. Correct bar spacing: 3/8" - 1/2" for parakeets and finches; 1/2" - 5/8" for cockatiels and conures; 3/4" - 1" for African Greys and Amazons; 1" - 1.5" for macaws and cockatoos.

Minimum cage sizes by species: parakeet -- 20"W x 18"D x 18"H; cockatiel -- 24"W x 18"D x 24"H; conure -- 30"W x 24"D x 30"H; African Grey or Amazon -- 36"W x 24"D x 48"H; macaw -- 36"W x 36"D x 60"H or larger. These are genuinely minimums, not targets. Birds benefit from as much space as possible -- larger cages reduce stress and allow more exercise.

Perches: More Variety Than You Think You Need

Foot health is directly affected by perch variety. A bird standing on the same diameter round perch all day develops foot problems analogous to what a human develops walking on flat concrete every day. Natural variation in diameter, texture, and surface material exercises different foot muscles and maintains healthy foot tissue.

Essential perch types: Natural wood perches (manzanita, java wood, grapevine) are the gold standard -- irregular diameter, interesting texture, and appropriate hardness for bill conditioning. Rope perches provide softness and irregular grip; place near sleeping positions if the bird sleeps on a perch. Concrete or pumice perches (one per cage only) help maintain nail length; place at the food bowl location since birds spend significant time there. Sand or sandpaper perch covers should be avoided -- they abrade foot skin and cause sores without significant nail wear.

Perch placement: Position the primary high perch where the bird spends most resting time 2/3 up the cage height -- birds prefer high perches for security. Second perch at a different height and angle. Place perches away from food and water containers to prevent droppings contamination. Leave the lower 1/3 of the cage clear for the cage bottom -- don't crowd perches in that zone.

Food and Water Placement

Droppings contaminate food and water when placed below perches. Attach food bowls to the cage side at approximately mid-height, away from all perch positions directly above. Stainless steel bowls are strongly preferred over plastic -- plastic scratches and harbors bacteria in the grooves; stainless steel is easy to sterilize and lasts indefinitely. Ceramic is acceptable. Never use galvanized zinc bowls -- zinc toxicity is a serious and common problem in birds.

Water must be changed daily regardless of appearance. Bacteria multiply rapidly in bird water bowls, particularly in warm rooms with droppings contamination. Water bottles stay cleaner longer but must be checked daily to ensure the spout isn't clogged (a common problem) -- a clogged bottle means the bird went without water. Train birds to use bottles before relying on them as the sole water source. Provide both a bottle and a bowl during the transition.

Location and Environment

Place the cage against a wall on at least one side -- this provides a sense of security and reduces the 360-degree predator exposure that stresses birds in free-standing locations. Avoid: kitchens (PTFE from overheated non-stick cookware produces polytetrafluoroethylene fumes that cause acute pulmonary hemorrhage and death in birds within minutes of exposure; this has been well-documented since the 1970s), high-traffic areas where startling is frequent, near air vents (drafts stress respiratory systems), near exterior doors (cold drafts, escape risk), and direct sun exposure that heats the entire cage without shade.

Ambient temperature: most pet bird species tolerate 65-85 degrees F. Night temperatures below 60 degrees F require a supplemental cage cover or heat source for most parrots. A cage cover at night provides psychological security, reduces sleep disruption from household lights, and provides warmth. Dark, quiet, 10-12 hours of sleep per night is the target.

Cage Contents: Toys and Mental Stimulation

An empty cage is a boring cage. Birds need novelty and mental challenge. Rotate 3-5 toys in and out of the cage weekly -- familiar toys become invisible; new toys provide stimulation. Foraging toys (containers that hold food that must be opened or manipulated) satisfy natural feeding behavior; birds in the wild spend most of their active hours searching for food. Shredding toys (palm fronds, cork, softwood -- especially important for African Greys and cockatoos who shred naturally) provide bill exercise and tactile satisfaction. Foot toys (small objects to pick up and hold) exercise the feet and beak. Mirrors create the illusion of a companion for single birds but can cause chronic over-stimulation in some species; introduce cautiously.

Cage cleaning: spot clean daily (remove soiled papers or cage liners, wash soiled perches), weekly full cleaning with warm water and bird-safe cleaner. Avoid bleach products without thorough rinsing; vinegar solution (1:1 with water) is a safe, effective disinfectant that requires no rinsing residue concerns.
