A good bird diet is usually boring in the best way: reliable staple food, repeatable produce habits, and treats used strategically instead of emotionally.
Rapid weight loss, chronic refusal to eat new foods, vomiting, or dramatic droppings changes should be treated as health issues, not just picky behavior.
The ideal parrot diet is 50β70% high-quality pellets, 20β30% fresh vegetables and fruits, and 10% or less seeds, nuts, and cooked whole foods. Seeds as the primary diet cause fatty liver disease, vitamin A deficiency, and early death in most parrot species. Avocado, onion, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are toxic to all parrots. Food requirements scale with species size β what is fine for a macaw is not automatically appropriate for a parakeet.

Why Seeds Alone Fail
Seeds are nutritionally incomplete for parrots. They are high in fat and low in vitamin A, calcium, vitamin D3, and essential amino acids. A parrot fed primarily seeds typically shows:
- Vitamin A deficiency (hyperkeratosis β thickened, crusty nares and feet; respiratory infections; eye discharge)
- Fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis) from excess fat
- Calcium deficiency (linked to seizures in African greys, chronic egg-laying complications in females)
- Iodine deficiency in budgies (goiters)
Seeds are not inherently bad β they are a poor-quality staple when fed as 80β90% of the diet. The same seeds as 10% of the diet alongside pellets and vegetables are fine as a treat and behavioral enrichment.
Pellets: The Foundation
Commercially formulated pellets are nutritionally complete for parrots. They provide balanced vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and energy without the fat excess of seeds. Transitioning a seed-addicted bird to pellets requires patience:
- Offer pellets in the morning when the bird is hungriest; offer seeds in the afternoon
- Mix pellets with a small amount of fruit juice or mashed fruit to make them initially more palatable
- Never starve a bird into eating pellets; weight loss during transition is dangerous. Weigh the bird weekly during transition.
- Most birds convert within 4β8 weeks
Well-regarded pellet brands by species size:

Avoid pellets with artificial food coloring β there is no nutritional benefit and some birds are sensitive to dyes.
Fresh Food: What Works
Fresh vegetables and limited fruit should be a daily part of all parrot diets. Target dark colors (high in carotenoids and vitamin A):
Excellent vegetables (offer daily or frequently):
- Dark leafy greens: kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, spinach (limited β oxalic acid can interfere with calcium in large amounts), bok choy, arugula
- Orange and yellow vegetables: carrots, sweet potato (cooked), butternut squash, bell peppers
- Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts (crucifers provide glucosinolates with antioxidant properties)
- Zucchini, cucumber, celery, green beans
Fruit (limit to 10β15% of fresh food β high sugar):
- Berries (blueberries, raspberries, pomegranate) are lower sugar and high in antioxidants
- Apple, pear, mango, papaya (remove seeds from apple and pear)
- Grapes β some controversy exists; limit to occasional treat
Cooked food options (varied weekly):
- Brown rice, quinoa, barley, whole grain pasta
- Cooked legumes: lentils, black beans, chickpeas (cooked; raw legumes can be toxic)
- Hard-boiled or scrambled egg (plain; protein source, especially during breeding)

Water
Fresh water daily, minimum. Parrots drop food in water dishes; bacterial growth begins within hours at room temperature. Use heavy ceramic or stainless bowls that resist tipping. Some owners use water bottles to keep water clean longer; train birds to use them with a brief demonstration showing water exits when the nozzle is pressed. Change water bottles weekly and scrub the nozzle.
Supplements
Parrots on a balanced pellet-based diet do not need vitamin supplements β over-supplementing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D3, E, K) causes toxicity. Supplements are needed for birds on seed-heavy diets or diagnosed with specific deficiencies. If supplementing vitamin A for a deficient bird, use beta-carotene (the plant precursor, which the body converts as needed) rather than preformed vitamin A, which carries overdose risk. African greys may benefit from supplemental calcium from a cuttlebone or mineral block. Always discuss supplementation with an avian vet.
