The Short Answer
Most pet birds eat too many seeds and not enough of anything else. Seeds are high in fat and low in nearly every essential nutrient β a seed-only diet is like living on french fries. The foundation of a healthy bird diet is 50β70% high-quality fortified pellets, supplemented with 20β30% fresh vegetables, and seeds or treats making up no more than 10β20%. The exact balance varies by species: softbills (canaries, finches) and hookbills (parrots, parakeets, cockatiels) have different requirements, and toxins like avocado and onion are fatal to all of them.
Why Seeds Are Not a Complete Diet
Seeds are the most common food sold for pet birds and the most common source of nutritional disease. A seed-only diet is deficient in: vitamin A (leading cause of respiratory infection, poor feather condition, and immune suppression), vitamin D3 (needed for calcium absorption), iodine (causes goiter in budgies), calcium (secondary to vitamin D3 deficiency), and multiple essential amino acids. The result is a bird that appears healthy for 1β3 years, then develops progressively worsening immune function, feather quality, and systemic disease.
The problem is behavioral as well as nutritional. Birds raised on seeds prefer seeds β they're palatable, calorie-dense, and familiar. Transitioning a seed-addicted bird to pellets requires patience: gradually mix pellets into seeds over 4β8 weeks, increasing the pellet ratio weekly. Never remove all seeds at once, as birds will sometimes choose starvation over unfamiliar food. Supervise closely during transition and weigh the bird weekly to ensure it is actually eating.
Species-Specific Considerations
Parakeets / Budgerigars: Highly susceptible to iodine deficiency goiter on seed-only diets. Transition to Harrison's Fine or Zupreem Fruit Blend pellets (small size). Supplement with dark leafy greens. Millet spray is the highest-value training treat for parakeets.
Cockatiels: Similar to parakeets, prone to vitamin A deficiency. Dark orange and yellow vegetables (carrot, sweet potato, red bell pepper) are effective vitamin A sources. Amazon Parrots: Prone to obesity and vitamin A deficiency. Low-fat diet is important β limit nuts and sunflower seeds which are high in fat even for a healthy bird. High-vegetable diets with moderate pellets work well.
Lories and Lorikeets: Specialized nectar and pollen feeders. They require liquid nectar diets (Nekton-Lori, Orlux Lori Dry) plus fresh fruit; they cannot thrive on standard pellets or seeds. Their digestive tract is specialized and different from other parrots.
Canaries and Finches (softbills): Do well on a mix of small seeds (canary seed, millet), high-quality egg food (dried egg protein supplement), and fresh greens. Pellets are available in small sizes for finches but are less accepted by these species than by hookbills. Fresh greens are important: chickweed, dandelion, and spinach are readily eaten. Egg food provides protein especially critical during breeding season.
Foods That Are Unexpectedly Safe
Several foods that people assume are unsafe for birds are actually nutritious: hot peppers and chili flakes (birds lack the capsaicin receptor and don't taste the heat), cooked eggs (excellent protein source, fine as an occasional treat), cooked meat in small amounts for omnivorous species, and most cooked grains and legumes. Pasta, rice, and cooked beans (thoroughly cooked to destroy hemagglutinin in raw beans) are often readily accepted and nutritionally valuable.
