Cats are a different story. That absence of data is not the same as proof of safety. Veterinary toxicologists and poison control centers extrapolate from the dog research and from a small number of individual case reports, and they consistently advise treating grapes and raisins as unsafe for cats too, since species-specific safety has never been established (ASPCA APCC, n.d.).

One reason peanut butter specifically comes up so often in cat-safety questions is that it's frequently used by dog owners to disguise pills or fill puzzle toys, and that habit sometimes carries over to multi-pet households without much thought about whether the same trick is appropriate for the cat in the house too. Researchers eventually identified tartaric acid, and its potassium salt, as the most likely toxic principle responsible for the kidney damage seen in canine cases (Sutton et al., 2022). Tartaric acid concentration varies by grape variety, ripeness, and growing conditions, which may explain why some dogs tolerate grapes with no apparent harm while others develop severe injury from a handful. Whether cats process tartaric acid differently than dogs, and whether their smaller body size and different metabolism change the risk equation, has not been formally studied.

Cats that are already overweight or have a history of pancreatitis are particularly poor candidates for any fatty treat, peanut butter included, since a flare of pancreatitis can be triggered by a single high-fat meal and typically requires urgent veterinary care involving pain management, fluids, and sometimes hospitalization. For these cats, even the small amount of fat in a lick of peanut butter is a bigger relative risk than it would be for a lean, healthy cat.

Even beyond fat content, some cats develop a mild reaction specifically to the legume proteins in peanuts themselves, separate from any fat or additive concern, though true peanut allergies appear to be rare in cats compared with more common protein sensitivities like beef or dairy. Because this kind of reaction can't be predicted in advance, the same small-first-taste caution recommended for any new food applies here too.

Some commercial cat foods and treats do include small amounts of peanut or other legume-derived ingredients as a minor component, which is a different situation from offering a spoonful of peanut butter directly, since those products are formulated and balanced specifically for feline nutrition rather than being a human snack food repurposed as a treat.

Cats have no nutritional need for fruit, so skipping grapes entirely costs them nothing. Safer options include small pieces of plain cooked chicken or fish with no seasoning, freeze-dried meat treats formulated for cats, and commercial cat treats designed to meet feline dietary needs. Many cats also respond well to catnip or cat grass grown specifically for pets, which offer enrichment without any toxicity concern, giving owners a satisfying reward option that sidesteps the entire grape and raisin question.

If a cat needs a pill hidden and peanut butter feels like the obvious tool, most veterinarians suggest a purpose-made pill-pocket treat formulated for cats instead, since these are designed with feline-appropriate ingredients, an easier-to-swallow texture, and no xylitol risk. Plain canned pumpkin or a small dab of the cat's own wet food can also work well for disguising a pill without introducing any of peanut butter's trade-offs.

Keep grapes and raisins out of reach, treat any ingestion as a reason to call your vet or a poison control hotline immediately, and stick to treats made specifically for cats. That approach costs nothing and closes the uncertainty gap entirely. If the goal is simply enrichment or a training reward, a purpose-made cat treat accomplishes the same thing without the fat load, the label-reading burden, or the choking risk that comes with a sticky spread. A cat's reaction to peanut butter can vary as much from cat to cat as any other new food, so treat that very first taste with the same caution you'd use for any unfamiliar snack.
