The tailless gene (M) is dominant but incompletely penetrant β€” kittens in the same litter can be rumpy, stumpy, or longy. Homozygous MM embryos die in utero, so all living Manx/Cymric cats are heterozygous (Mm). Responsible breeders never breed rumpy to rumpy.

Manx Syndrome is a collection of spinal defects (spina bifida, sacral agenesis, fused vertebrae) that can cause incontinence, hind-leg paralysis, and megacolon. Symptoms may not appear until 4-6 months. Always buy from a breeder who screens for spinal abnormalities.

The Cymric (pronounced "KIM-rick," named from the Welsh word for Wales) is the semi-longhaired version of the Manx cat. Both breeds share the defining characteristic: a naturally occurring taillessness mutation that originated on the Isle of Man. The taillessness gene in Manx and Cymric cats is dominant and lethal in homozygous form -- kittens inheriting two copies of the tailless gene die before birth, which is why Manx and Cymric litters always contain some-tailed kittens. The gene's effects on the spine extend beyond the tail and create a specific health concern -- Manx syndrome -- that responsible breeders work to minimize through careful selection.

Tail Varieties

Neither the Manx nor Cymric is uniformly tailless. The tailless gene produces a spectrum of tail expressions in kittens:

Rumpy -- completely tailless; a small hollow or dimple where the tailhead would be. The show-standard Manx and Cymric.

Rumpy-riser -- one to three tail vertebrae present, creating a slight rise at the tailhead but no moveable tail.

Stumpy -- a short, often curved or kinked tail of variable length. Some stumpies have mobility; others do not.

Longie (tailed) -- a near-normal or full-length tail. These kittens carry the gene but express it minimally; they are often used in breeding programs because they are the healthiest genetically (they are heterozygous without extreme tail reduction).

The long-haired gene that differentiates Cymric from Manx is a separate, recessive mutation; both long and short-haired kittens can appear in the same litter when both parents carry the longhair gene.

Manx Syndrome

The Manx gene affects not only the tail but all caudal (rear) spinal development. In some individuals, the gene's influence extends further forward than the tail alone, affecting the lumbosacral spine. Manx syndrome refers to a spectrum of neurological problems resulting from spinal cord compression or underdevelopment: fecal and urinary incontinence, hindlimb weakness or paralysis (bunny-hopping gait), and spina bifida (open neural tube). Signs typically appear by 4-6 months of age.

Responsible breeders avoid breeding rumpies to rumpies (increasing the chance of extreme spinal effects) and maintain litters with a mix of rumpy, rumpy-riser, and tailed kittens to reduce severity. Kittens showing any hindlimb weakness or incontinence by 4 months require veterinary evaluation and are not suitable for breeding or as pets if the syndrome is confirmed severe.

Temperament and Care

Cymric and Manx cats share a notably dog-like temperament among feline breeds: they often fetch, come when called, learn their name readily, and may growl or hiss protectively when strangers approach the home. They are highly loyal to their primary people, playful, and more active than the Persian or Ragdoll. They typically get along well with dogs when properly introduced.

The semi-longhaired Cymric coat requires brushing 2-3 times weekly to prevent matting in the chest, behind the ears, and belly. No undercoat plucking is necessary; the coat is more manageable than fully longhaired breeds. Bathing every 4-6 weeks maintains coat condition. Monitor the tail stub or rump area for skin infections (folds of skin in deeply tailless individuals can collect debris).
