Hydrocephalus sounds like a single disease, but it is really a pressure problem inside the skull. Cerebrospinal fluid is supposed to circulate through and around the brain, then be reabsorbed. When that flow is blocked, overproduced, or diverted by a congenital malformation or other disease, fluid can accumulate and compress delicate brain tissue. In kittens that can mean a dome-shaped skull or odd eye position; in older cats it may show up more as behavior and movement changes than head shape (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024; Cornell Feline Health Center, 2025).

Some animals show few obvious signs at first, which makes imaging important when neurologic clues do not fit a more routine explanation. Why do some cats develop hydrocephalus?
