The breed's popularity can hide an important reality: a Maine Coon can look magnificent and still come from a poorly screened line. Large size and good temperament are not evidence of cardiac soundness.
HCM is the red-flag health issue here, but it is not the only one. For a giant breed, joint comfort, body condition, and well-built home equipment matter more than many owners expect.
The Maine Coon is the largest domestic cat breed -- males commonly reach 15-25 pounds, with exceptional individuals recorded at 30+ pounds -- and one of the most beloved for temperament. They are described as 'dog-like' in behavior: they fetch, follow owners from room to room, respond to their names, and adapt to harness walking better than most cat breeds. Their semi-longhaired coat is easier to maintain than a Persian's, their health is robust for their size, and they are generally excellent with children, dogs, and other cats. Their one significant health concern -- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy -- is common in the breed and requires informed screening by owners and breeders.
Breed History and Natural Development
The Maine Coon is one of the few native American cat breeds, developed naturally in the harsh climate of Maine from cat populations that arrived with early European settlers and interbred over generations with local semi-wild cats. The cold Maine winters selected for large size, heavy coat, and robust constitution. Maine Coons were first documented in cat fancy records in the 1860s and won early American cat shows before Persian imports displaced them in popularity. The breed was revived in the 1950s and formalized with The International Cat Association (TICA) and CFA in subsequent decades.
Physical Characteristics and Growth Rate
Maine Coons grow slowly -- they do not reach full size until 3-5 years of age, significantly longer than most cat breeds. Females typically reach 10-15 pounds; males 15-25 pounds. Their coat is semi-long with a heavier ruff around the neck, tufted ears (lynx tips), and heavily furred toes (snowshoe paws, adapted for walking on snow). The coat is silky and less prone to matting than Persian fur, requiring brushing 2-3 times weekly with a stainless steel comb. The tail is long and plumed. They come in virtually every coat color except pointed (colorpoint is not part of the Maine Coon standard, though some associations are reconsidering this).
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
HCM -- thickening of the heart muscle wall -- is the most common heart disease in cats and is particularly prevalent in Maine Coons. Two HCM mutations have been identified in the breed: MYBPC3 A31P and MYBPC3 A74T. DNA tests are available for both. However, critically: DNA negative cats can still develop HCM through other genetic pathways not yet characterized. The DNA test eliminates known risk but does not guarantee a HCM-free cat. Best practice for Maine Coon breeders: DNA test for both mutations AND annual cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. Best practice for pet owners: annual cardiac ultrasound from age 2-3 onward. Signs of HCM in cats: rapid, labored breathing, open-mouth breathing, sudden hind limb weakness or paralysis (saddle thrombus -- a life-threatening emergency), lethargy, decreased appetite. Many cats with HCM show no signs until sudden decompensation -- surveillance is the only reliable detection method before clinical crisis.
Other Health Considerations
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a documented Maine Coon genetic condition causing progressive muscle weakness beginning in kittens at 3-4 months. Affected kittens cannot jump and have a swaying gait; they are not in pain but have reduced mobility throughout life. A DNA test identifies carriers and affected cats. Hip dysplasia occurs at surprisingly high rates given the Maine Coon's cat-like build -- 24% of Maine Coons in one study showed radiographic evidence -- though most are not clinically lame. Polydactyly (extra toes) is historically common in Maine Coons (the original Maine working cats were frequently polydactyl) but most show registries do not accept polydactyl cats in conformation classes.
