The big conceptual distinction is genetic: Peterbald hairlessness behaves differently from Sphynx hairlessness. That matters for breeding expectations and for why coat outcomes can look more varied than casual observers expect.
Hairlessness does not equal simplicity. Skin, ears, warmth, and sun exposure become daily-life management issues, and some cats remain partly coated rather than cleanly bald.
Peterbalds are a Russian hairless breed created by crossing a Donskoy (a Russian hairless breed) with an Oriental Shorthair. Unlike Sphynx cats, Peterbalds carry a dominant hairless gene (the HED gene) rather than a recessive one -- which means even one copy produces hairlessness. They range from completely bald to having a fine velour or brush coat depending on how many copies of the gene they carry. All require sun protection and weekly bathing to manage skin oils.
The Coat Spectrum
Peterbalds aren't uniformly hairless. The HED gene produces a spectrum based on gene dosage: ultra-bald (no hair at all, rubber-texture skin), flocked (fine peach-fuzz), velour (short fine coat 1-3mm), brush (wavy or wiry coat up to 5cm), and straight (normal coat -- carries the gene but doesn't express hairlessness). Brush-coated Peterbalds may lose coat as they mature. Show standards accept only the hairless to velour variants in championship competition.
Why They're Not Hypoallergenic
The most common misconception about hairless cats is that they're allergy-safe. Cat allergies are primarily triggered by the protein Fel d1, which is produced in saliva and sebaceous glands and deposited on skin and whatever surfaces the cat contacts. Hairless cats produce the same amount of Fel d1 as coated cats -- they just don't trap it in fur. Peterbalds and Sphynx cats spread Fel d1 directly onto everything they touch: furniture, clothing, and owners. Some allergic people tolerate them better due to reduced airborne allergen (no shedding), but they are not hypoallergenic.
Skin Care Requirements
Without fur to absorb skin oils, Peterbalds develop a greasy coat residue that accumulates within days. Weekly baths with a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo remove the buildup. Sun exposure causes sunburn in bald Peterbalds -- limit direct sun or use pet-safe sunscreen on ears and nose. They lose heat rapidly and seek warm spots; indoor temperatures below 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) cause behavioral discomfort and increased food intake to compensate.
Temperament and Social Needs
Peterbalds inherit Oriental Shorthair personality traits: highly vocal, extremely social, and demanding of attention. They do poorly in low-interaction environments and vocalize persistently when ignored. Most Peterbald owners describe them as closer to dogs in social behavior than typical cats. They coexist well with other cats and dogs that respect their boundaries.
