In heterozygous Folds (Fd/fd -- the only Fold used in responsible breeding programs), the osteochondrodysplasia is variable but present: shortened, thickened tail; tarsal joint thickening; progressive periarticular new bone formation around the hocks, stifles, and digits. In homozygous Folds (Fd/Fd -- produced by breeding two Folds together), the disease is severe and present at birth: immobile, swollen, painful joints, inability to walk normally, progressive deterioration.

Recognizing OCD in a Scottish Fold You Already Own

Signs of painful osteochondrodysplasia in a heterozygous Fold: reluctance to jump, stiff gait, tail that is rigid or held abnormally (cannot curve or wag normally), pain when the tail or distal limbs are handled, reduced grooming of hard-to-reach areas, behavioral changes indicating chronic pain. Radiographs will show periarticular new bone formation and shortened shortened digital bones. The severity varies by individual and is not predictable from the degree of ear folding. Pain management: NSAIDs (meloxicam under veterinary supervision), joint supplements, environmental modifications to reduce jumping demands.

Responsible Sourcing: Fold x Straight Only

If you choose a Scottish Fold, the absolute minimum ethical standard is: purchase from a breeder who breeds Fold to Straight (a Fold crossed with a British Shorthair or Scottish Straight -- a cat with normal upright ears carrying no FD copies). This produces 50% Fold and 50% Straight kittens; all are heterozygous at worst. Never purchase from a breeder who breeds Fold to Fold. Ask the breeder for documentation showing one parent was a Straight (normal ears). Request a pre-purchase veterinary exam including radiographic assessment of the tail and limbs in any Fold kitten before finalizing purchase.

Breed Bans

The Scottish Fold is banned from breeding registration in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway due to welfare concerns. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) in the UK withdrew registration of the breed in 1974. In contrast, the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) and TICA in the US continue to register the breed with some guidelines.
