The Ukrainian Levkoy is a rare breed developed in Ukraine in the early 2000s by crossing the Donskoy (hairless) with the Scottish Fold (folded ears). The result is a hairless or nearly hairless cat with inward-folding ears -- an unusual appearance that makes this one of the most distinctive cat breeds in existence. They are gentle, social, and dog-like in their attachment to their owners.
A Breed Built by Design
Breeder Elena Birjukova developed the Levkoy in 2000--2004, first registering the breed with the ICFA RUI (Ukrainian club) in 2004. The breed takes its name from the Levkoy plant (hoary stock), whose leaves fold similarly to the cat's ears. The Levkoy is not yet recognized by CFA, TICA, or FIFe, but has a devoted following in Eastern Europe.
The breed carries both the hairless gene from the Donskoy and the fold gene -- creating cats that may be hairless with folded ears, lightly furred with folded ears, or other combinations depending on which genes they inherit.
Physical Description
The Levkoy is medium-sized, with a long angular head, almond-shaped eyes, and distinctive inward-folded ears that give a "stepped" profile. The body is muscular but elegant -- not cobby like the Scottish Fold or Munchkin. Skin is loose with visible wrinkles, especially on the head and neck. Colors and patterns are visible through the skin pigmentation.

Temperament
The Levkoy is consistently described as active, playful, and strongly bonded to humans. They follow their owners from room to room and do not tolerate long solitude well. They get along well with other cats and gentle dogs, and are patient with children. They vocalize but are not overly loud.
Care Requirements
Like all hairless cats, the Levkoy needs weekly bathing to remove skin oil buildup that would normally be absorbed by fur. Ears accumulate wax and debris faster than furred breeds -- weekly cleaning with a veterinarian-approved solution is necessary. Without fur insulation, they are sensitive to both cold and sun exposure. Indoor living is mandatory.
Health Considerations
The critical health issue with the Levkoy is the folded ear gene. The same mutation that causes ear folding (TRPV4 gene) causes osteochondrodysplasia -- abnormal bone and cartilage development -- in all cats that carry it, not just fold-to-fold crosses. All cats with the fold gene are affected to some degree; homozygous cats (fold x fold crosses) develop severe, painful arthritis. Many veterinary geneticists and welfare organizations, including the WSAVA, advise against breeding cats with this mutation at all.
Potential owners should ask breeders for radiographic evidence of skeletal health in breeding cats and in kittens before purchase. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) screening via echocardiogram is also recommended, as HCM is prevalent in the Donskoy lines.
