The 2020 AAHA/AAFP Feline Vaccination Guidelines identify FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) and rabies as core for all cats (Stone et al., 2020). Panleukopenia in particular is highly contagious and frequently fatal in unvaccinated kittens, spreading easily through contaminated environments even without direct cat-to-cat contact. Rabies vaccination is also legally mandated in most U.S. jurisdictions because the virus is uniformly fatal once symptomatic and transmissible to people (CDC, 2024).

Because these core diseases are so persistent in the environment and so severe, veterinary organizations recommend core vaccination even for cats that never go outdoors, since panleukopenia virus can be tracked indoors on shoes, clothing, or other objects and can survive on surfaces for extended periods (AAHA, 2020).

Because the dog data is so much more extensive, some veterinary toxicologists caution against reading too much into the relatively low number of published feline cases, arguing it likely reflects fewer cats being exposed and reported rather than genuine biological resistance. Cats are known to be pickier eaters than dogs and are statistically less likely to raid a fruit bowl or counter, which naturally reduces the number of exposure events available for researchers to study in the first place.

Herd immunity refers to the protective effect that occurs when a large enough proportion of a population is immune to a disease, which slows or interrupts its spread even among individuals who are not vaccinated or whose immunity has waned. In shelters, catteries, and communities with high vaccination coverage, outbreaks of panleukopenia and calicivirus are far less common and less severe, because the virus has fewer susceptible hosts to move through (AAHA, 2020). If a veterinarian recommends inducing vomiting, timing matters: it's generally most effective within the first couple of hours after ingestion, before much of the fruit has moved out of the stomach. Bloodwork to check kidney values is typically repeated at intervals over the following 48 to 72 hours, since kidney injury markers can take time to rise even when damage has already begun, and a single normal test shortly after exposure doesn't fully rule out a developing problem.

Kittens generally begin the FVRCP series around 6 to 8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3 to 4 weeks until they reach approximately 16 to 20 weeks old, because maternal antibodies can interfere with vaccine response earlier in life and their waning is unpredictable (AAHA, 2020). Rabies vaccination is typically given as a single dose starting at 12 to 16 weeks, depending on local regulations and vaccine labeling. After the initial kitten series, a booster is usually given one year later, and subsequent boosters follow either an annual or triennial interval depending on the specific vaccine product and a cat's risk profile.
