Boxers are medium-large (55-70 pounds) brachycephalic dogs with exceptional family temperament and a significant cardiac health burden. Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), also called Boxer cardiomyopathy, causes sudden cardiac death in otherwise healthy young Boxers and affects an estimated 30% of the breed. A DNA test identifies carriers of one associated gene variant; holter monitoring detects arrhythmias. Buying from tested parents and annual cardiac evaluation is standard for responsible Boxer ownership.

ARVC: The Breed's Defining Health Challenge

ARVC in Boxers involves abnormal electrical conduction in the right ventricle, producing ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) that can escalate to ventricular tachycardia and fatal fibrillation. The condition presents in three patterns: asymptomatic (VPCs detected only on holter), symptomatic (weakness, collapse during exercise), and sudden death without prior signs. A DNA test identifies dogs carrying the ARVC1 gene mutation (published 2009 by Dr. Kathryn Meurs) -- but this test identifies only one of potentially multiple ARVC-associated mutations, so a negative result doesn't guarantee a Boxer is free of ARVC risk. Annual 24-hour holter monitoring starting at age 2-3 is the most complete screening tool available.

Brachycephalic Challenges

Boxers have shorter faces than some brachycephalic breeds but still develop BOAS-related breathing issues at a meaningful rate. The flat face also makes them highly heat-sensitive -- Boxers overheat faster than most breeds in warm weather. They should not be exercised in temperatures above 75 degrees F (24 degrees C) without careful monitoring, and should not be left in vehicles or unventilated spaces in any warm weather. Signs of heat stress: excessive panting, staggering, brick-red gums, and vomiting.

Cancer Rate

Boxers have one of the highest cancer rates of any breed -- mast cell tumors, lymphoma, and brain tumors appear at higher-than-average rates. Mast cell tumors (MCTs) can appear as benign-looking skin bumps; any new skin mass on a Boxer warrants a fine needle aspirate at the veterinarian rather than a "wait and see" approach. MCT grade determines treatment; early detection of low-grade MCTs is curative with surgery.
