Titers are a reasonable option when
The idea that dogs need a vaccine every single year quietly stopped being standard veterinary guidance years ago, and a lot of owners never got the memo. For core vaccines, distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus, veterinary guidelines already recommend spacing revaccination out to every three years in adult dogs, not annually. Titer testing is a way to check that the three-year gap is actually holding, with a blood draw instead of a guess.

A titer test reads the immune system's memory, not just the last shot
Instead of injecting a vaccine and hoping it worked, a titer test draws blood and measures how much antibody against a specific disease is still circulating. High enough antibody levels suggest the immune system remembers the threat well enough to respond fast if exposed. That's meaningfully different information than "it's been a year, so it's time," which tells you nothing about actual protection.
This matters most for dogs where an extra, unnecessary vaccine carries real downside: dogs with a history of vaccine reactions, older dogs with other health issues, or dogs whose owners are simply trying to avoid over-vaccinating without guessing.
Titers work great for some vaccines and not at all for others
The catch is that titer testing is well-validated for the core vaccines, distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus, where circulating antibody correlates reasonably well with protection. It's a different story for vaccines like leptospirosis and Bordetella, where immunity doesn't show up the same way in a blood titer, and revaccination on the standard schedule is still the better approach regardless of what a titer might show.
Titers are a data point, not a legal substitute
One more thing titers can't do: replace a legally required rabies vaccination in most places. Rabies vaccination law is set by local and state government, not by what your dog's antibody level happens to be, so a high rabies titer doesn't exempt a dog from the vaccine schedule your jurisdiction requires. Ask your vet which specific vaccines in your dog's protocol are good titer candidates before assuming the whole schedule can shift to blood draws.
None of this is about skipping vaccines. It's about replacing a calendar-based guess with an actual measurement, for the specific vaccines where that measurement means something.
WSAVA's 2024 Guidelines for the Vaccination of Dogs and Cats support the use of in-practice titer tests to confirm seroconversion to core vaccine antigens (distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus) after the puppy series, to assess ongoing protection in adult dogs, and to help manage outbreaks in shelters, while explicitly noting that titer testing is not reliable for vaccines that don't produce durable, easily measured antibody responses, such as leptospirosis. The same guidelines describe the accepted core revaccination interval for adult dogs as every three years or longer following the initial series and first-year booster.
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines similarly classify distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and rabies as core vaccines recommended for all dogs, with a defined revaccination schedule for each, and note leptospirosis was added to the core recommendation in a 2024 update. Neither WSAVA nor AAHA guidance treats titer testing as a substitute for legally mandated rabies vaccination.
