Isoxazoline medications (Bravecto, NexGard, Simparica, Credelio) — originally developed for flea/tick prevention — are now the treatment of choice for both types of mange. They're safer, easier to administer, and more effective than traditional treatments like ivermectin or amitraz dips.
Sarcoptic mange (scabies) IS contagious to humans. If your dog is diagnosed with scabies, all in-contact dogs need treatment, and humans should see their doctor if they develop an itchy rash. The human rash resolves once the dog is treated.

Two mites, two completely different problems that share a name
"Mange" covers two conditions that could not behave more differently. Sarcoptic mange, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, is the version that spreads through a shelter or a dog park in days and makes a dog scratch until it bleeds. Demodectic mange, caused by Demodex canis, is caused by a mite that lives quietly on almost every healthy dog and normally causes no problem at all.
Sarcoptic mange is a contagion problem
Sarcoptic mites burrow into the skin and trigger an intense allergic-style itch response, and they spread easily between dogs through direct contact, a shared bed, a shelter kennel, even brief contact at a park. The itching is often severe enough that a dog is scratching non-stop, with hair loss and crusty skin developing fastest at the ear edges, elbows, and hocks. Sarcoptic mange can also cause short-lived, itchy bumps on people who handle an infected dog, though it does not establish a lasting infestation on human skin.
Demodectic mange is an immune-system problem
Demodex mites live in hair follicles on virtually every dog without causing any trouble, kept in check by a healthy immune system. Problems start when that balance shifts, most commonly in puppies under a year old whose immune systems are still maturing, producing small patchy areas of hair loss that often clear up on their own as the puppy matures. A more serious, spread-out form in adult dogs usually points to an underlying issue suppressing the immune system, and finding that underlying cause matters as much as treating the mites themselves.

Demodectic mange in its localized puppy form often just needs monitoring, while the generalized adult form needs a longer treatment course and bloodwork to look for what triggered it.
