Cardigans are the 'thinking person's Corgi.' They're more reserved and thoughtful than their Pembroke cousins. They assess situations before acting and bond deeply with their family. This thoughtfulness makes them excellent training partners — they genuinely want to figure out what you're asking.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is the #1 health concern for Cardigans. Their long back is vulnerable. Prevent jumping from furniture, use harness instead of collar for walks, maintain lean weight, and know the signs: reluctance to move, yelping when picked up, dragging hind legs. Emergency vet immediately.
The Chinese Shar-Pei is a medium-large breed (40-65 lbs, 18-20 inches) developed in southern China as a hunting and fighting dog, now kept primarily as a companion. They are calm, independent, and loyal to family but reserved with strangers. The breed has significant health challenges: Shar-Pei Fever (swine fever / familial Shar-Pei fever), amyloidosis, skin fold infections, entropion, and hypothyroidism. Lifespan is 8-12 years. The heavy wrinkling that defines the breed also concentrates its health burdens.

Shar-Pei Fever is not a minor problem -- it is a systemic disease
Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF) is a hereditary auto-inflammatory condition estimated to affect 20-25% of the breed. Episodes consist of sudden fever (103-107 degrees F), joint swelling (particularly the tibiotarsal/hock joints), and lethargy lasting 24-36 hours. Episodes begin as early as 18 months and recur throughout life. Most episodes resolve without treatment but are intensely uncomfortable and stressful for the dog.
The real danger of FSF is not the fever itself but amyloidosis -- the long-term consequence of repeated inflammatory episodes. Each fever episode deposits amyloid protein in the kidneys, liver, and other organs. Over years of repeated deposits, organ function declines. Renal amyloidosis causes progressive kidney failure, the most common cause of death in Shar-Peis. The median age of death from renal failure in affected dogs is 4-5 years -- far below the breed's potential lifespan.
Diagnosing and managing Shar-Pei Fever
There is no genetic test commercially available for FSF. Diagnosis is clinical, based on the pattern of recurrent fever episodes in a Shar-Pei. Monitoring tools: semi-annual urinalysis and urine protein:creatinine ratio detect early amyloid deposits in the kidneys before symptoms appear. Creatinine and BUN elevations appear late in renal disease -- by the time they rise, significant nephron loss has occurred. SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine) testing detects earlier functional decline.
Management: colchicine (0.01-0.03 mg/kg daily) reduces the frequency and severity of fever episodes in some dogs and may slow amyloid deposition. Anti-inflammatory doses of NSAIDs during fever episodes provide comfort. A low-protein diet is sometimes recommended prophylactically, though evidence for this in Shar-Peis without established renal disease is limited. Working with an internist experienced with this breed is strongly recommended.
Skin problems are universal in Shar-Peis
The dramatic wrinkling creates warm, moist skin-fold environments where bacteria and yeast proliferate. Skin fold dermatitis requires regular cleaning of all skin folds -- facial folds, tail fold, lip folds, and body folds -- with an appropriate cleanser (medicated wipes containing chlorhexidine or miconazole) 2-3 times weekly. Folds that are chronically infected despite cleaning may require surgical reduction (fold excision).
The breed is also prone to primary seborrhea, atopy (environmental allergies), food allergies, and a distinctive condition called "meat glue" syndrome or cutaneous mucinosis, where vesicles (fluid-filled skin blebs) form and rupture, leaving erosions. This requires veterinary management with immunosuppressive therapy in severe cases.
Eye problems: entropion is common and often requires surgery
Entropion -- inward rolling of the eyelid -- is extremely common in heavily wrinkled Shar-Peis. The wrinkled forehead causes the skin over the eyes to roll the eyelids inward, causing eyelashes and skin to contact the cornea. This is painful and causes corneal ulceration, scarring, and potentially vision loss. In puppies, temporary tacking sutures relieve pressure while the face matures. In adult dogs, permanent corrective surgery (blepharoplasty) is often required. Untreated entropion causes progressive corneal damage and eventual blindness.
