Your New Fish Tank Is Trying to Kill Your Fish - Here Is How to Stop It

You fill the tank, dechlorinate the water, plug in the filter and heater, and then you wait. The fish have to wait too -- ideally several weeks before they go in. This waiting period has a name: cycling. It is the process of establishing a population of beneficial bacteria in your filter media capable of processing fish waste fast enough to keep the water safe. Skip it and you will watch fish die of poisoning in what looks like perfectly clean water.

The nitrogen cycle is not optional. Every aquarium runs on it. Understanding what it does and how to speed it up is the difference between a tank that works and one that doesn't.

What the Cycle Does

Fish produce ammonia constantly through their gills, urine, and uneaten food. Ammonia is toxic at even low concentrations -- 0.5 ppm causes gill damage; 2 ppm can kill fish within hours. In a healthy, cycled tank, bacteria called Nitrosomonas (or similar species, depending on the tank) convert ammonia into nitrite. Nitrite is also toxic at low levels, causing brown blood disease in fish -- it blocks hemoglobin from carrying oxygen. A second bacterial group, Nitrospira, converts nitrite into nitrate, which is much less harmful and removed by regular water changes. The cycle is complete when the bacteria are established and stable enough to process all incoming ammonia before it accumulates.

How Long It Takes

In a new tank with no seeding, an ammonia source, and stable temperatures around 77 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the cycle typically completes in four to six weeks. Signs that cycling is done: ammonia reads zero, nitrite reads zero, and nitrate is detectably above zero (usually 5 to 20 ppm). At that point the bacteria are established and fish can be added gradually. Do not add the full fish load at once -- a bacterial colony sized for two fish cannot immediately handle ten.

Methods for Cycling

Fishless cycling with ammonia: add pure ammonia (unscented, no surfactants) to 2 to 4 ppm. The bacteria colonize and begin processing it. Dose ammonia every few days to maintain a food source. This is the most common method and puts no fish at risk. Fishless cycling with fish food: add a pinch of fish food daily. As it decomposes, it releases ammonia. Slower and messier than pure ammonia but avoids the need to source ammonia separately. Fish-in cycling (legacy method -- not recommended): add fish from day one and do daily water changes to keep ammonia below toxic levels while the bacteria establish. Stressful for fish and requires close daily monitoring. Only acceptable if you have no choice (e.g., fish were given to you before you were ready). Seeding: the fastest method. Add used filter media, sponge, or substrate from an established tank. The existing bacterial colony jumpstarts your cycle. A full cycled sponge from a healthy, disease-free tank can cycle a new tank in days rather than weeks. Many local fish stores will give you a scoop of substrate or a used sponge if you ask.

What to Test and When

Test ammonia and nitrite every two to three days during cycling. Do not test pH obsessively early on -- it will fluctuate and stabilize. The critical readings are ammonia (should spike early, then fall to zero as bacteria establish), nitrite (will spike after ammonia falls, then fall to zero as the second bacterial group establishes), and nitrate (will rise as nitrite drops, confirming the cycle is complete). Use a liquid test kit, not strip tests -- liquid kits are significantly more accurate.

The Crash

Bacterial colonies can crash after the cycle completes. Common causes: a large water change that removes chlorinated tap water into the filter media (chlorine kills bacteria -- always dechlorinate before adding water), cleaning the filter with tap water (same issue -- rinse media in old tank water only), a large medication dose (most antibiotics and many ich treatments kill beneficial bacteria), and removing all fish from the tank (removing the ammonia source causes the colony to die back). After a crash, the tank needs to re-cycle. Daily water changes and reduced feeding protect fish during this period.
