Why regular water changes are non-negotiable

A fish tank is a closed system. Waste, uneaten food, and fish respiration continuously add compounds that the nitrogen cycle converts to nitrate. Nitrate accumulates steadily -- the only way to remove it is a partial water change. A tank without regular water changes becomes increasingly toxic: nitrate above 40 ppm causes chronic stress, suppressed immune function, and shortened lifespans. Above 80 ppm, nitrate causes visible symptoms and fish begin dying.

Many beginners assume that if fish look healthy, the water is fine. Fish compensate for poor conditions until they can't. By the time fish show obvious stress, conditions have typically been suboptimal for weeks. Test water weekly to confirm parameters rather than relying on observation alone.

Equipment you need

A gravel vacuum (Python No-Spill Clean and Fill, Aqueon Water Changer, or a manual siphon with gravel tube): this combines siphoning with substrate cleaning in one pass. It draws water from the tank while the flared end disturbs gravel to pull trapped waste into the water column and out through the hose. Without a gravel vacuum, waste accumulates in the substrate and decomposes, adding ammonia load. A bucket designated for aquarium use (never use soap): a 5-gallon bucket works for tanks up to 20 gallons; a 5-gallon bucket with multiple trips for larger tanks. Dechlorinator (Seachem Prime, Aqueon Water Conditioner, or equivalent): required any time tap water is used.

Step-by-step process

Start the siphon by submerging the gravel tube, covering the open end, lifting it above the tank rim, releasing -- the water column drops and siphoning begins. Work the gravel tube through the substrate in a grid pattern, lifting it slightly and pushing it down into gravel to pull waste up. Cover the entire substrate surface. Aim to remove 25-30% of tank volume. For a 20-gallon tank, that is 5-6 gallons.

While siphoning, observe fish behavior. Fish that hide or seem distressed during water changes may be reacting to temperature, chlorinated water being added without dechlorinator, or a flow rate that creates excessive current. All are fixable.

Prepare replacement water: fill your bucket from the tap, measure temperature (should match tank water within 1-2 degrees), add dechlorinator at the manufacturer's dose (Prime: 2 drops per gallon), then pour slowly into the tank to avoid disturbing substrate or stressing fish. A small plate or plastic bag on the substrate surface disperses the pour and protects delicate substrate arrangements.

What not to do

Do not use the same bucket for cleaning anything with soap or chemicals. Even trace detergent kills fish. Do not rinse filter media under tap water on the same day as a large water change -- this double-disruption can crash the cycle. Stagger filter maintenance and water changes by at least 3-5 days. Do not add water without dechlorinating -- municipal water chlorine kills beneficial bacteria on contact and damages fish gill tissue. Do not change 100% of the water in a crisis attempt to "clean" the tank -- this removes all the nitrate-processing bacteria and restarts the nitrogen cycle from scratch, making conditions worse within 24-48 hours.

Frequency adjustments

Weekly 25-30% changes work for moderately stocked tanks with average waste producers. Heavily stocked tanks or tanks with messy fish (goldfish, oscars, large cichlids) need more frequent changes -- twice weekly or larger weekly changes (40%). Lightly stocked, well-planted tanks may maintain good parameters with bi-weekly changes. Test water to determine your specific tank's needs rather than following a one-size schedule.
