The Heat Plus Salt Protocol: Step by Step
Step 1: Confirm the diagnosis. Ich appears as tiny white spots resembling grains of salt, uniformly distributed on fins and body, not raised or fuzzy. Fish may scratch against objects ("flashing"). If spots are gold-dust colored or appear only on the body without fins, consider velvet (Oodinium) instead -- same general approach but longer treatment.
Step 2: Raise temperature. Increase heat by 1-2 degrees F per hour over 24-48 hours until reaching 86F/30C. Fast temperature swings stress fish. Some cold-water or sensitive fish (discus at the high end are fine with 86F; fancy goldfish tolerate up to 80F maximum) have temperature limits -- research your specific fish. When to Add Medication
