Koi Disease Response Timeline

Day 1: Symptom Recognition Behavior change β€” flashing, gasping, lethargy, isolation, loss of appetite. Check water parameters first (ammonia, nitrite, pH, temp). 80% of 'disease' is poor water quality mimicking illness. Day 1-2: Quarantine & Diagnosis Move sick koi to hospital tank (100+ gal minimum). Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) is the most feared disease in the koi hobby. It's highly contagious, has no cure, and causes 80-100% mortality in infected ponds. The virus is species-specific (only affects common carp and koi). Survivors become carriers for life. Prevention: buy from KHV-free certified breeders, quarantine for 4 weeks at 72-78Β°F (temps activate the virus), and test via PCR before adding to your pond.

80% of 'koi diseases' are actually WATER QUALITY problems. Before treating for any disease, test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, KH, and temperature. An ammonia spike of just 0.25 ppm can cause gasping and lethargy that looks identical to a gill parasite. A koi pond's biofilter takes 6-8 weeks to mature and can crash from overfeeding, medication, or cleaning filters with tap water.


Koi Health Basics

Koi (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) live 25-35 years in well-maintained ponds and can grow to 24-36 inches and weigh 35 lbs. Their longevity means health problems have long-term consequences if not addressed promptly. The three most common serious diseases in koi: Koi Herpesvirus (KHV, a notifiable disease in many countries), bacterial ulcer disease, and parasitic infestations (Ich, Trichodina, flukes). All koi health problems trace back to water quality in the majority of cases. A pond with ammonia above 0 ppm, nitrite above 0 ppm, or pH outside 7.0-8.5 is a stressed koi pond, and stressed koi get sick.

Koi Herpesvirus is the most devastating koi disease worldwide

KHV (Cyprinid herpesvirus 3, CyHV-3) emerged in the late 1990s and has caused massive koi and common carp die-offs globally. It is highly contagious, kills rapidly (within 24-48 hours of acute signs), and has no cure. Signs: gill necrosis (pale, destroyed gill tissue), skin lesions, sunken eyes, and mass mortality in a pond at water temperatures of 59-77 degrees Fahrenheit (15-25 degrees Celsius). Below and above this temperature range, the virus is less active -- koi may survive but become lifelong carriers. KHV is a notifiable disease in the UK, EU, USA, and many other countries; confirmed outbreaks legally require reporting. There is no approved treatment; surviving fish are permanent carriers. Prevention: quarantine all new koi for 4-6 weeks before pond introduction.

Ulcer disease kills slowly and insidiously until intervention

Bacterial ulcer disease (primarily Aeromonas and Pseudomonas species) is the most common serious bacterial condition in koi. It begins as a small red spot or roughened scale patch, progresses to an open ulcer exposing muscle, and can eventually penetrate to body cavity. Water quality deterioration (especially ammonia spikes after overfeeding or fish death), physical trauma, or parasitic infestation creates entry points for bacteria. Treatment requires: water quality correction first (no antibiotic works in a pond with ammonia), removal of affected fish to a hospital tank, cleaning the ulcer under anesthesia (clove oil: 40-60 mg/L), debriding necrotic tissue, packing with chloramphenicol ointment or oxytetracycline paste, and systemic antibiotics (injectable or medicated food). Salt at 0.3% reduces osmotic stress during treatment.

Parasites require correct identification before treatment

The most common koi parasites require microscopic identification to treat correctly -- treating for Ich will not help a koi with gill flukes, and vice versa. Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis): white spots 0.5-1mm on body and fins, scratching behavior. Treat with heat (raise to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, incompatible with KHV range), salt (0.3%), or formalin/malachite green combination. Anchor worm (Lernaea): visible worm-like parasites attached to the body, red inflamed attachment site. Remove physically with forceps, treat with organophosphate (Dimilin). Fish lice (Argulus): flat, disc-shaped crustacean visible to the naked eye on the skin. Treat with Dimilin. Gill flukes (Dactylogyrus): cause labored breathing, clamped fins, and excess mucus; diagnosed by gill biopsy and microscopy. Treat with praziquantel (2-10 ppm bath treatment or medicated food).

Water temperature dictates koi metabolism and feeding protocols

Koi are ectotherms -- their metabolic rate changes directly with water temperature. Above 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius): normal digestion, feed 2-3 times daily with regular protein diet. 50-59 degrees Fahrenheit (10-15 degrees Celsius): slowed digestion; switch to low-protein wheat germ-based food, feed once daily only when fish are actively seeking food. Below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius): stop feeding entirely. Koi cannot digest food below this temperature; undigested food ferments in the intestine and causes bacterial infection. In winter ponds in northern climates, use a pond de-icer to maintain a small ice-free area for gas exchange (koi need oxygen even when not active) but do not feed from November through March in most northern U.S. climates.
