Marine velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum) is the most lethal aquarium pathogen — it can kill an entire tank in 48-72 hours. Any fish with 'golden dust' needs immediate treatment.
Hyposalinity (1.010-1.013 SG) at 76°F over 30 days effectively treats marine ich but will NOT kill velvet or Brooklynella — identify the disease before choosing treatment.
Marine aquarium fish are more susceptible to disease than freshwater fish for several reasons: the higher difficulty of transport and acclimation, the stress of capture from wild reefs, and the fact that most saltwater species are wild-caught rather than captive-bred. The three most common diseases -- marine ich, marine velvet, and Brooklynella -- are all external parasites that move fast and kill quickly if not treated promptly with proven protocols.

Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans)
Marine ich is the saltwater equivalent of freshwater ich but is caused by a completely different organism (Cryptocaryon irritans vs. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) and does not respond to freshwater treatments. Symptoms: white spots on the body and fins, roughly 0.5-1mm, resembling grains of salt or sugar. Fish may scratch against rocks (flashing), breathe rapidly, and lose appetite as the infestation progresses.
The parasite has a complex lifecycle with a free-swimming tomont stage that burrows into substrate and multiplies -- a single visible spot eventually releases 200+ new infectious theronts. Treatment: copper-based medications (cupramine at therapeutic levels: 0.35-0.5 mg/L free copper) in a hospital tank. Never treat in a display tank with live rock and invertebrates -- copper kills them and is near-impossible to fully remove from live rock. The display tank must be left fallow (fishless) for a minimum of 72-76 days at 78F to allow the parasite lifecycle to complete without hosts.
Marine Velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum)
Marine velvet moves significantly faster than ich and kills faster -- mortality can occur within days of visible symptoms. Symptoms: a fine, dusty gold or rust-colored coating on the body and fins (like powder or velvet fabric), rapid breathing, lethargy, and severe flashing. Fish lose condition rapidly and die from gill damage as the parasite infiltrates respiratory surfaces.
Treatment: copper at therapeutic levels is effective; chloroquine phosphate (250 mg/10 gallons) is an alternative with better invertebrate compatibility for holding tanks. Display tank fallow period: minimum 6-8 weeks at 78F. Velvet is highly contagious -- any new fish should be quarantined for 4-6 weeks before entering the display tank to prevent introduction.
Brooklynella (Brooklynella hostilis)
Brooklynella primarily affects clownfish (Amphiprion species) and is often called "clownfish disease." Symptoms: excessive slime production, peeling or sloughing skin patches, rapid breathing, and loss of coordination. It progresses from visible symptoms to death faster than most marine diseases -- sometimes within 24-48 hours of clinical signs. Formalin baths (37% formaldehyde at 1 mL/4 gallons for 30-45 minutes) are the primary treatment; freshwater dips can provide temporary relief but do not cure the infection.
Quarantine: The Most Important Prevention Tool
A separate hospital/quarantine tank (a bare-bottom 10-20 gallon with a heater, sponge filter, and PVC pipe hides) should be standard equipment for any marine aquarist. All new fish should be quarantined for 4-6 weeks and observed before entering the display tank. Prophylactic copper treatment during quarantine is practiced by advanced marine aquarists to eliminate subclinical parasites before they enter the display system. This step alone prevents the majority of disease outbreaks in mature reef tanks.
Bacterial Infections
Bacterial disease (Vibrio, Aeromonas, Pseudomonas species) typically presents as ulcerations, fin rot, or pop-eye (exophthalmia) following physical injury, parasitic damage, or significant water quality deterioration. Treatment with antibiotics (kanamycin, nitrofurazone) in a hospital tank; improve water quality; address underlying cause. Antibiotic treatment is never appropriate in a display tank with live rock -- it will crash the biological filter.
