The Tank You Buy Is Already Too Small
Pet stores sell Red-Eared Slider hatchlings in containers barely large enough to turn around in. The hatchlings fit. The adult turtles -- which reach 10-12 inches -- will not. An adult Red-Eared Slider needs a minimum of 100-120 gallons of water, which is typically a 150-gallon stock tank or a large custom enclosure. This isn't a specialty requirement; it's basic welfare for an animal that swims constantly and requires space to thermoregulate. Planning for the adult size from the beginning saves hundreds of dollars in equipment upgrades and prevents the growth stunting that occurs when turtles are kept in undersized enclosures for years.
The 10-gallons-per-inch guideline applies to water volume. A 6-inch turtle needs 60 gallons of water as a starting point -- and turtles grow. Factor in another 40-50% for the land area (basking platform) that doesn't count toward water volume. Most successful turtle keepers end up with 100+ gallon setups within 3-5 years.
Filtration: More Than You Think You Need
Turtles are extraordinarily messy. They defecate in the water they swim in, tear apart food rather than eating neatly, and shed skin constantly. The biological filtration needed to handle this waste load is significantly higher than the same-volume fish aquarium. Filter the turtle tank with equipment rated for 2-3x the actual water volume: a 100-gallon turtle tank needs a filter rated for 200-300 gallons per hour at minimum.
Canister filters work well for turtle tanks because they handle high waste loads and can be cleaned without disturbing the tank. Submersible filters and power filters are options but need more frequent cleaning. Without adequate filtration, ammonia and nitrite spike within days, causing shell rot, eye infections, and respiratory illness. Weekly 25-30% water changes supplement filtration and dilute nitrates that even good filtration can't fully remove.
UVB and Basking: Non-Negotiable for Bone and Shell Health
Turtles are ectotherms that bask for multiple hours daily to raise body temperature for digestion, immune function, and vitamin D3 synthesis. Without a proper basking area and UVB source, they develop metabolic bone disease (MBD) -- soft shells, curved limbs, and immune compromise that leads to repeated infections and early death. UVB bulbs rated 5.0 or 10.0 (T5 HO format) should span most of the basking area and be replaced every 6-12 months even when still producing visible light -- UVB output drops significantly before the bulb burns out. The turtle should be able to get within 8-12 inches of the UVB bulb without glass or plastic between them (both filter UVB wavelengths significantly).
Diet and Feeding
Aquatic turtle diet varies by age: hatchlings and juveniles are mostly carnivorous, requiring animal protein (earthworms, feeder fish, bloodworms, commercial turtle pellets) for growth. Adults become more omnivorous, with plant material (romaine, dandelion greens, water hyacinth) making up 25-50% of the diet.
