Saddle fit is one of the most common yet underdiagnosed causes of behavioral problems and reduced performance in horses. A saddle that pinches the withers, rocks on the spine, or bridges (contacts front and rear but not the middle) creates pain that the horse cannot communicate except through behavior: resistance, spooking, bucking, pinned ears when saddled, reluctance to go forward, and girthiness. Saddle fit should be evaluated by a certified saddle fitter (CSWF or ECPB) annually and whenever a horse's body condition changes significantly.

The Anatomy the Saddle Contacts
The saddle tree sits over the longissimus dorsi muscles -- the long muscles running beside the spine that propel the horse forward. The panels (cushioned underside of the saddle) should distribute pressure evenly across this muscle surface. The saddle must clear the withers by 2-3 fingers of clearance and clear the spine along its entire length -- the channel between the panels should not contact the dorsal spinous processes at any point. A saddle that contacts the spine or pinches the wither over the supraspinous ligament causes pain equivalent to sitting on a sharp object with every step.
Western Saddle-Specific Considerations
Western saddles are heavier than English saddles (25-50 lbs vs. 15-25 lbs) and place weight distribution differently. The wide swells and cantle of a western saddle require careful assessment of tree width -- a tree too narrow creates a "bridging" effect where weight is borne only at front and rear contact points rather than distributed across the panel. Gullet width (the measurement across the tree at the front) is the primary fitting measurement: a horse with high prominent withers needs a narrower gullet (6 inches or less); a wide, flat-backed horse needs a wider gullet (7+ inches). Interchangeable gullets in many modern western saddles allow adjustment for changing horses or body condition.
Signs of Saddle Fit Problems
Behavioral: pinned ears or swishing tail when saddling; flinching or moving away when cinched; unwillingness to stand for mounting; spooking, bucking, or rearing under saddle that wasn't present before or worsens over time. Physical: white hair patches (pressure rubs) behind the withers or on the shoulder blades; dry spots on the saddle pad when the rest is wet (areas of over-pressure that prevent sweating); back pain on palpation (the horse flinches or dips when the longissimus dorsi muscles are pressed firmly beside the spine).
Fitting for a Changing Body
A horse's body changes seasonally and with conditioning level. A horse that gains muscle with training fills out the topline; a horse dropped from work or on restricted diet loses topline. A saddle that fit 6 months ago may no longer fit today. Pad shims can temporarily compensate for minor fit changes but aren't a substitute for correct saddle fit. Annual professional evaluation is the minimum; working horses under intensive training benefit from semi-annual assessment.
