Why Those Red Eyes
Red-eyed tree frogs' vivid coloration serves a predator-deterrence function called 'startle coloration.' During the day, they tuck their limbs under their green body and close their red eyes -- they are extremely cryptic, resembling a leaf on a branch. When a predator approaches and disturbs them, they suddenly open their red eyes and flash their blue-striped sides and orange feet -- a brief burst of startling color that momentarily confuses the predator, giving the frog a fraction of a second to escape. This 'deimatic' display is one of the better-documented examples of startle coloration in amphibians.
Enclosure Setup
Minimum for 2-3 adult red-eyed tree frogs: 18 x 18 x 24 inches (tall enclosure -- vertical space matters for arboreal frogs). Bioactive setups work excellently: live plants (Pothos, Philodendron, Bromeliad, Ficus) create humidity, cover, and landing sites. Temperature: 72-80 degrees F daytime; 68-72 degrees F at night (cool nights are important -- they stimulate natural breeding behavior). Do not allow temperatures to exceed 82 degrees F.
UVB Lighting
Red-eyed tree frogs are crepuscular/nocturnal and receive low levels of UVB in the wild from brief dusk/dawn activity periods. Providing low-intensity UVB (2-5% T5 tube) supports vitamin D3 synthesis and reduces reliance on supplementation. Some keepers manage successfully without UVB by supplementing carefully, but UVB is considered best practice by herpetological husbandry researchers. Photoperiod: 12-14 hours light in summer, 10-12 hours in winter.
Feeding
Red-eyed tree frogs are insectivores. Staple prey: crickets (appropriately sized -- no larger than the frog's head width). Variety: dubia roaches, waxworms (occasionally, high fat), hornworms, silkworms. Feed juveniles daily; adults 3-4 times per week. Gut-load feeder insects before feeding: collard greens, carrot, sweet potato. Dust prey with calcium (without D3 if UVB is provided) at every feeding; multivitamin every 2-4 feedings. Offer food at dusk when the frogs become active -- they rarely eat during the day.
Handling and Stress
Red-eyed tree frogs can be handled but are not 'handling-oriented' pets. Their skin absorbs substances from hands; wash hands thoroughly with water only (no soap residue) before handling. Limit handling to brief health checks. They can drop from your hands if startled -- always handle over a soft surface close to the ground. The main appeal of red-eyed tree frogs is observation, not handling: watching them hunt at night, vocalize during the breeding season (males call with a chuckling sound), and display their colors is highly rewarding without requiring constant interaction.
