Tomato Frog topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
The tomato frog (Dyscophus antongilii and related species) is a robust, brilliantly colored frog from Madagascar named for the vivid red-orange color of adult females. Males are smaller and duller -- brownish-orange. They are terrestrial, burrowing frogs kept by intermediate-level hobbyists who want a visually striking animal that is relatively easy to maintain. They are not active, they rarely move, and they eat well -- classic sit-and-wait predator appeal.

Species in the Hobby
Three Dyscophus species are sometimes sold as tomato frogs. D. antongilii, the true tomato frog, is the largest (females reach 4 inches) and is CITES Appendix I -- listed as endangered, and wild-caught specimens cannot be legally imported. Most tomato frogs in the U.S. pet trade are captive-bred D. antongilii or D. insularis (similar size, slightly less red). D. guineti is smaller and comes from different regions. All are kept identically.

The Defensive Secretion
When grabbed, tomato frogs inflate their body and secrete a white, sticky mucus from their skin. This material is mildly toxic and is known to cause allergic reactions -- including anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. People with known latex allergies may be more sensitive to amphibian skin secretions. Never touch your eyes, nose, or mouth after handling without washing first.
Enclosure
A single adult tomato frog does well in a 20-gallon long tank. Substrate is critical: tomato frogs burrow and need 3--4 inches of moist, loose substrate. Coconut fiber alone or mixed with organic topsoil (no perlite, no fertilizers) works well. The substrate must stay moist but not waterlogged. A shallow water dish for soaking should always be present.
Temperature: 65--80 degrees F. They are sensitive to heat; temperatures consistently above 82 degrees F cause stress and health problems. This is a relatively cool-tolerant frog compared to tropical species. No supplemental heating is often needed in temperate climates -- a room-temperature enclosure works. Humidity: 60--80%. Mist lightly every 1--2 days.
Feeding
Tomato frogs are ambush predators that eat insects in the wild. In captivity: crickets, roaches, earthworms, and hornworms form the staple diet. Feed every 2--3 days for adults; every other day for juveniles. Dust with calcium + D3 at every feeding; vitamin supplement 2x per month. They will consume waxworms enthusiastically but these should be treats only -- high fat content causes obesity. Adults can occasionally eat pinky mice, but protein overload from too many mice causes fatty liver disease.
Health
Red-leg syndrome (bacterial septicemia, often Aeromonas spp.) is the most common health emergency -- reddening of the ventral skin and legs, lethargy, open-mouth breathing. Requires immediate veterinary attention and appropriate antibiotic treatment. Chytrid (Bd) can affect tomato frogs; captive-bred animals from established breeders carry lower risk. Impaction from substrate is possible if fine-particle substrates like sand are used -- use chunky coconut fiber. Respiratory infections result from cold, wet conditions; ensure good ventilation. Lifespan: 6--10 years.
