African soft-furred rats were historically known as 'multimammate mice' because females have 8-12 pairs of mammary glands (most rodents have 5-6). This makes them important in cancer research.
These animals are escape artists β they can squeeze through gaps as small as 1/2 inch. A glass tank with a tight mesh lid is safer than a wire cage.
African soft-furred rats (ASFRs, also called multimammate mice, Mastomys natalensis) are small African rodents widely kept in the reptile hobby as feeder animals but increasingly maintained as pets in their own right. They are fast, short-lived (2--3 years), and reproduce with stunning speed -- a single female can produce 12--20 pups every 23 days. Understanding their biology is essential before acquiring them, whether as pets or as a feeder colony.

Biology and Why the Name Is Complicated
The common name "multimammate mouse" refers to the female's 8--12 pairs of mammary glands (vs. 5 pairs in domestic mice). Despite being called "mice" colloquially, ASFRs are not closely related to house mice (Mus musculus) -- they belong to a separate genus. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa and are one of the primary reservoir hosts for Lassa fever virus in West Africa. This zoonotic concern is relevant: wild-caught ASFRs imported without proper quarantine pose significant public health risk. Captive-bred ASFRs from established colonies in the US and Europe carry no such concern in practice, but buyers should source from reputable breeders.
As Pets
ASFRs handled from birth become tame and curious, interacting readily with owners. They are smaller than rats but larger than mice (40--70 grams). Their speed and agility make them challenging to handle safely in open environments -- they startle easily and can vanish quickly. They are social animals best kept in same-sex pairs or small groups. Minimum housing: 10-gallon tank with a secure mesh lid (they are excellent escape artists). Bedding: 2--3 inches of aspen or paper bedding. Diet: standard mouse/rat laboratory block diet; fresh vegetables in small amounts. Lifespan: 2--3 years.
Feeder Colony Management
ASFRs are valued as feeder rodents because of their exceptional reproductive rate and small size (useful for juvenile snakes and lizards that cannot consume adult mice). A colony of 1 male to 3--4 females in a 20-gallon tank produces a continuous supply. Key management points: separate pregnant or nursing females to prevent stress-related pup cannibalism; remove males after confirming pregnancy to prevent back-to-back breeding that depletes females; provide ample nesting material and multiple hide areas to reduce competition aggression. Health Considerations
ASFRs are generally hardy but susceptible to respiratory infections in cold, damp conditions. Tumors (mammary and other) occur in older individuals. Handling stress can cause heart failure in highly stressed animals -- minimize rough handling. Bites from startled ASFRs can occur; standard wound care applies for captive-bred animals. As noted, wild-caught individuals from Africa present Lassa fever and other zoonotic risks -- only acquire captive-bred animals from established US/European sources.
