Chinchilla Diet Priorities

Why Chinchilla Diet Is Especially Unforgiving
Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera and Chinchilla chinchilla) are hindgut fermenters from the high-altitude Andes -- their digestive systems evolved on sparse, dry, high-fiber vegetation with minimal fat, sugar, or moisture. In captivity, the digestive tract remains specialized for this sparse diet and is poorly equipped to handle the rich, high-sugar, high-fat foods that owners instinctively offer as treats. Digestive upset, bloat, liver disease, and dental malocclusion are among the leading causes of premature death in captive chinchillas -- and diet error is the primary driver of each. Chinchillas can live 15+ years with correct care; the average captive lifespan is often far shorter due to dietary mistakes.
The Foundation: Timothy Hay
Timothy hay (Phleum pratense) must be available 24 hours a day, in unlimited amounts, as the absolute foundation of the chinchilla diet. This is not negotiable. Hay accomplishes three critical functions: it provides the long-stem fiber that keeps the hindgut fermentation process working correctly (preventing GI stasis and bloat); it provides the continuous chewing required to wear chinchilla teeth correctly (preventing dental malocclusion); and it forms the bulk of caloric and nutritional intake in wild-type proportions.
Orchard grass, meadow grass, and botanical hay blends are acceptable substitutes or supplements. Alfalfa hay is appropriate for growing chinchillas and pregnant/nursing females but is too high in calcium and protein for healthy adult maintenance -- it should not be fed as the primary hay to adults. Fresh hay should be offered daily or every other day; stale, dusty, or moldy hay is refused and potentially harmful.
Pellets: The Secondary Component
High-quality timothy-based chinchilla pellets (Oxbow Essentials Chinchilla, Mazuri Chinchilla) provide supplemental nutrition and should be offered in measured amounts: 1-2 tablespoons (approximately 10-15 grams) per chinchilla per day. More is not better -- excess pellets reduce hay consumption (the more important food) and provide unnecessary calories. Pellets formulated for rabbits or guinea pigs are not adequate substitutes; chinchilla pellets are formulated to match chinchilla-specific nutritional requirements.
Avoid seed-mix chinchilla foods (those resembling bird seed with colorful pieces, dried fruit, and seeds). These allow selective feeding of palatable high-fat, high-sugar components while rejecting nutritionally appropriate portions, producing dietary imbalance.
Water
Fresh water must be available at all times from a clean sipper bottle or heavy ceramic bowl. Water bottles are preferred because they cannot be contaminated with substrate or feces. Chinchillas originated in arid environments and do not require large water volumes, but water availability cannot be restricted. Change water daily; clean bottles weekly to prevent biofilm accumulation.
Treats: Strict Limits
The treat list for chinchillas is very short, and frequency is very low -- one small treat 2-3 times per week maximum. Appropriate treats in small amounts: dried rosehips (rich in vitamin C), dried hibiscus flowers, plain rolled oats (not flavored oatmeal), dried herbs (chamomile, dandelion leaves). These are low-sugar, low-fat options that approximate the incidental treat foods a wild chinchilla might encounter.
Do not feed: fresh fruit (too high in sugar), dried fruit (even more concentrated sugar), raisins (often recommended -- actually too sugary), nuts (too high in fat), seeds, crackers, bread, yogurt drops (marketed as chinchilla treats but essentially candy), corn, or any processed human food. A single raisin or grape given repeatedly becomes a reliable pathway to fatty liver disease in chinchillas. These foods are not just suboptimal -- they are genuinely dangerous fed regularly.
Dental Disease and Its Dietary Connection
Chinchilla teeth grow continuously throughout life -- open-rooted (hypsodont) teeth that require constant wear. Timothy hay provides the necessary mechanical wear through side-to-side grinding of long fiber. Pellet-heavy or hay-deficient diets fail to provide adequate wear, and teeth elongate (malocclusion), causing difficulty eating, drooling (a major warning sign), and eventually complete inability to eat -- a fatal trajectory if not identified and treated early.
Signs of dental malocclusion: reduced food intake, dropping food from the mouth (quidding), drooling, weight loss, wet chin or chest (from drooling), swellings on the jaw. Dental disease diagnosis requires radiographs under anesthesia; visible tooth examination alone misses the most significant problems occurring at the tooth roots inside the jaw. Treatment is dental trimming/burring under anesthesia by an experienced exotic veterinarian, repeated as needed as the disease progresses -- there is no cure for malocclusion, only management.
Gastrointestinal Stasis
GI stasis -- the slowing or stopping of normal hindgut motility -- is rapidly life-threatening in chinchillas, similar to GI stasis in rabbits. Causes: insufficient hay fiber, stress, pain from any cause, or dehydration. Signs: reduced or absent fecal output (check the cage floor daily), reduced appetite, distended or painful abdomen, lethargy. GI stasis is a veterinary emergency. While waiting for veterinary care: ensure the chinchilla is warm, offer hay continuously, and avoid force-feeding food or water. Do not administer simethicone (Gas-X) without veterinary guidance -- appropriate for gas/bloat but not for stasis proper.
