Chinchillas are obligate nasal breathers with small, narrow airways and no ability to breathe through their mouths. This anatomy means any respiratory compromise -- from pneumonia, upper respiratory infection, heart disease, or physical obstruction -- rapidly becomes life-threatening. A chinchilla showing open-mouth breathing, labored breathing, or blue-tinged gums is in acute respiratory distress and requires emergency veterinary care within minutes to hours, not days.

Normal vs. Abnormal Breathing in Chinchillas

A healthy chinchilla at rest breathes 40 to 80 times per minute with barely visible chest movement. Signs of respiratory distress include: rate over 100 breaths per minute, exaggerated chest or abdominal movement, extended neck posture (trying to open the airway), open-mouth breathing (always abnormal), clicking or crackling sounds with breathing, nasal discharge (clear, white, or yellow), and blue or purple tint to the gums or tongue (cyanosis, indicating hypoxia). Any single sign warrants immediate veterinary evaluation.

Causes of Respiratory Disease in Chinchillas

Bacterial pneumonia is the most common cause of serious respiratory disease. Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are primary pathogens. Bordetella spreads readily from rabbits and dogs to chinchillas; never house chinchillas with rabbits. Pseudomonas, common in water-related environments, can cause severe hemorrhagic pneumonia with rapid mortality.

Upper respiratory infections (URI) present with sneezing, nasal discharge, and mild lethargy. These can progress to pneumonia within 24 to 72 hours if untreated, particularly in animals with underlying stress (shipping, temperature fluctuation, recent boarding). Cardiac disease causes pleural effusion that compresses the lungs, mimicking respiratory infection on presentation.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Chest radiographs are the cornerstone of diagnosis, distinguishing pneumonia from cardiac disease and identifying the distribution of lung involvement. Blood work (CBC) shows elevated white cell counts in bacterial infection. Culture and sensitivity testing of nasal discharge or transtracheal wash guides antibiotic selection.

Treatment of bacterial pneumonia involves systemic antibiotics for 10 to 21 days. Enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg orally every 12 hours) or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (30 mg/kg orally every 12 hours) are common first choices pending culture. Nebulization with saline or dilute antibiotics improves drug penetration in severe cases. Supportive care includes warmth (82 to 85 degrees F for sick chinchillas -- higher than their normal preferred range of 60 to 72 degrees F), hand-feeding critical care formula if anorexic, and oxygen supplementation at the clinic.

Prevention

Maintain temperatures below 75 degrees F and humidity below 50%; chinchillas overheat rapidly (heat stroke occurs above 80 degrees F) and humidity promotes respiratory pathogens. Keep enclosures at ground level away from drafts. Quarantine new animals for 30 days before introducing to existing chinchillas. Avoid contact with rabbits, guinea pigs, and dogs (Bordetella reservoir species). Annual veterinary wellness exams can detect early cardiac changes before respiratory compromise occurs.
