Finding your hamster cold, stiff, and barely breathing is one of the most alarming experiences for hamster owners -- and one that is frequently misidentified as death. Hamsters enter torpor (a form of shallow hibernation) when temperatures drop below 65 degrees F. A torpid hamster breathes only 1--4 times per minute and is nearly motionless. Torpor in pet hamsters is a thermoregulatory stress response, not healthy hibernation, and requires immediate warming. A hamster that does not warm and revive within 30--60 minutes of gradual warming needs emergency veterinary care.

Identifying Torpor vs. Death
A torpid hamster: slightly warm to the touch (not cold as a stone), slight movement when stroked, slow but detectable breathing if you watch closely for 30+ seconds, whiskers or limbs that show small twitches when stimulated. A dead hamster: completely cold and rigid, no response to any stimulation, no detectable breathing over 2+ minutes of careful observation. If there is any doubt, assume torpor and attempt revival -- you risk nothing by trying.
Reviving a Torpid Hamster
Gradual warming is the correct approach -- do not place in an oven, under a heat lamp at close range, or in hot water. Hold the hamster against your skin (inside your shirt, in cupped hands) and let body heat transfer slowly over 15--30 minutes. Alternatively, place on a heating pad set to low with a towel between the pad and the hamster. As it warms, it should begin moving within 20--30 minutes, show increased breathing, and eventually stand and seek food. Offer water with a tiny amount of honey or sugar when it is alert enough to drink -- torpor depletes energy reserves.
Preventing Torpor
Keep the hamster's enclosure between 68--75 degrees F at all times. Draft-free placement away from exterior walls and windows in winter. If indoor temperatures fluctuate below 65 degrees F, a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat or placement in a warmer room prevents recurrence. Hamsters that enter torpor repeatedly face chronic stress, immune suppression, and shortened lifespan. This is not a natural healthy state for pet hamsters -- it is a survival response to inadequate environmental temperatures.
Syrian vs. Dwarf Hamsters
Syrian hamsters (golden hamsters) are the most prone to torpor. Dwarf hamsters (Campbell's, Russian Winter White, Roborovski) are slightly more cold-tolerant but can also enter torpor below 60 degrees F. Chinese hamsters are somewhat intermediate. All pet hamster species require the same warm-temperature management.
