Hibernation Emergency Response
African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) are NOT true hibernators, but they will attempt hibernation when temperatures drop below 65F. A hedgehog in hibernation attempt is experiencing a life-threatening metabolic emergency -- it is not resting. If your hedgehog is cold, curled, and unresponsive, warm it immediately against your body and contact a vet.

Why This Happens
African pygmy hedgehogs evolved in sub-Saharan Africa where temperatures do not drop enough to trigger true hibernation. Their European hedgehog relatives are true hibernators with physiological adaptations for it. African pygmy hedgehogs lack these adaptations -- when they 'hibernate' in response to cold, they enter a torpor state that slows metabolism without the hormonal and physiological preparation that makes true hibernation survivable. Body temperature drops, heart rate and respiration slow, and the animal cannot thermoregulate back to normal on its own. Without intervention, they die.
Signs of Hibernation Attempt
The hedgehog feels cold to the touch (normal hedgehog body temperature is 96-98F; during hibernation attempt it may drop to 60-70F). It is curled tightly and does not uncurl when gently handled. Breathing is very slow or barely visible. It cannot support its own weight when placed on a surface. Do not confuse this with sleep -- a sleeping hedgehog is warm, will stir when touched, and uncurls relatively quickly.
Emergency Response
Do not use external heat sources (heat lamps, heating pads, hot water) for initial warming -- rapid external warming without core warming can cause cardiovascular shock. Tuck the hedgehog inside your shirt, against your skin. Your body temperature is appropriate for safe, gradual warming. The hedgehog should begin stirring within 10-20 minutes as it warms. Once it is moving and aware, ensure it has access to food and water -- hibernation attempt is metabolically depleting. Schedule a veterinary visit within 24 hours -- hedgehogs that have experienced hibernation attempt are weakened and may have secondary complications.
Prevention
Keep the ambient temperature in the hedgehog's space between 72-80F at all times. Use a thermometer in the room, not just your general assessment. Temperature naturally drops at night -- if your home cools significantly, the hedgehog's enclosure needs supplemental heating (a ceramic heat emitter, under-tank heater, or space heater on a thermostat). Be especially vigilant in autumn, in air-conditioned homes in summer, and during power outages.
After a Hibernation Attempt
Monitor carefully for the next 2-4 weeks. Hedgehogs that have experienced hibernation attempt are at increased risk for wobbly hedgehog syndrome exacerbation (if applicable), pneumonia (aspiration or cold-induced), and hepatic lipidosis from metabolic stress. Any refusal to eat for more than 24-48 hours post-recovery warrants veterinary evaluation.
