The Short Answer

Indoor rabbits live significantly longer and healthier lives than outdoor hutch rabbits on average. Indoor rabbits benefit from stable temperature, protection from predators, earlier illness detection, more human interaction, and avoidance of outdoor parasites and diseases. Outdoor rabbits face risks from heat stroke (fatal above 82-85 degrees F), cold stress, predator panic attacks (a rabbit can die of stress-induced heart failure just from a predator approaching the hutch without physical contact), myxomatosis and calicivirus, and fly strike. If a rabbit must be outdoor, the setup requirements to keep it safe are substantial.

Why the House Rabbit Movement Changed the Standard

The House Rabbit Society was founded in 1988 largely in response to the recognition that rabbits kept in outdoor hutches lived dramatically shorter lives and suffered preventable health problems compared to those kept as true house pets. A rabbit in a 3-foot hutch with minimal interaction, exposed to the elements and predator sounds, is chronically stressed. An indoor rabbit with free-roam time, regular interaction, and a climate-controlled environment can live 10-12 years; a hutch rabbit often lives 3-5 years.

The comparison isn't just theoretical. A 2008 survey by the RSPCA found that most outdoor rabbit hutches in the UK failed to meet even minimum welfare requirements. Common problems: hutches too small for the rabbit to stand on its hind legs (a natural behavioral need); no shelter from rain, wind, and sun; no protection from predator visual access causing constant stress; no daily health monitoring since the rabbit is "outside" rather than underfoot.

Temperature Risks: Heat Kills Faster Than Cold

Rabbits are adapted to cold climates (their wild ancestor lives at elevations in the Iberian Peninsula and central Asia) but are poorly adapted to heat. A rabbit's thermoregulatory capacity is limited -- they can't pant like dogs, can only dissipate heat through their ears and behaviors like sprawling. Core temperature above 104 degrees F (their normal body temperature is 101-104 degrees F) is already dangerously elevated. Environmental temperatures above 80-85 degrees F cause heat stroke rapidly, particularly in high humidity. A rabbit in a hutch in direct sun in summer in most of the US will die.

Cold tolerance is much better but still has limits. A healthy adult rabbit with adequate hay and dry, draft-free shelter can tolerate temperatures down to 40 degrees F. Below freezing: water freezes, the rabbit must generate significant body heat, and health deteriorates if nutritional intake doesn't compensate. Young, sick, or elderly rabbits have much lower cold tolerance. The key cold risk is wet and cold combined -- a rabbit with wet fur in cold temperatures loses heat catastrophically.

Predators: Physical Attack and Fatal Fright

Rabbits as prey animals can die from the physiological stress of a predator encounter without being physically harmed. The vagal response -- excessive parasympathetic activation -- can cause cardiac arrest in rabbits experiencing extreme fear. A fox, cat, dog, or raccoon investigating an outdoor hutch at night, even without penetrating the cage, can kill a rabbit through fright. This is not rare -- it's a documented and frequent cause of death in outdoor rabbits, particularly in areas with foxes, raccoons, and domestic dogs that roam at night.

Physical predator attack is also common despite hutch enclosures. Raccoons and dogs can breach standard wooden hutch hardware. Wire gauge matters: 14-gauge welded wire (not chicken wire, which can be pulled apart) is the minimum for a secure rabbit enclosure. The hutch must have a solid lockable latch; raccoons can open simple hook latches.

Fly Strike (Myiasis): A Summer Horror for Outdoor Rabbits

Fly strike is one of the most serious and distressing conditions in outdoor rabbits. Flies (primarily blowflies like Lucilia sericata) lay eggs on soiled fur, wet fur, or skin wounds. The eggs hatch within 12-24 hours in warm weather, and the larvae (maggots) burrow into the skin and underlying tissue. A rabbit with mild diarrhea (wet tail from soft cecotropes) left outdoors in summer can develop fly strike within hours of the flies having access. By the time the owner notices maggots -- often when the rabbit is already in shock -- the damage can be severe. Fly strike can kill within 24 hours.

Prevention for outdoor rabbits: check the rabbit's rear end for cleanliness twice daily in summer. Address any cause of loose stools (dietary change, GI issue, obesity preventing cecotrope eating) immediately. Use fly deterrent products (Rearguard, a pour-on insect growth regulator that prevents larvae from developing) during summer months for outdoor rabbits. This is another reason indoor rabbits have significantly better welfare outcomes -- fly strike essentially never occurs in indoor rabbits.

Converting an Outdoor Rabbit to an Indoor Life

Rabbits that have lived outdoors can be brought indoors successfully with a gradual transition. The adjustment concerns: indoor environments are warmer, may have more noise and activity, and require litter training. Most rabbits adapt well within 1-2 weeks. Litter training is straightforward -- rabbits naturally pick a corner to use as a toilet; place a litter box there and reinforce by placing some droppings and soiled bedding in it. Rabbit-proof the indoor space (cover electrical cords, block access to toxic plants) before allowing free roam. Indoor rabbits need the same hay, diet, and exercise as outdoor rabbits -- bringing them inside doesn't reduce their need for space and activity.
