Housing Upgrade Path
Rabbits need significantly more space than most commercial cages provide. The minimum recommended space for a single rabbit is an enclosure where the rabbit can take 3-4 hops in one direction, stand fully upright on its hind legs without its ears touching the top, and lie fully stretched out -- typically at least 8 square feet of living space plus 24 square feet of daily exercise area. Most pet store cages marketed for rabbits are suitable only as sleeping quarters, not full housing. Rabbits confined to small cages develop skeletal problems, behavioral issues, and are significantly less healthy and longer-lived than rabbits with adequate space.

The Cage on the Shelf Is Not a Home -- It's a Starting Point
Walk into any pet store and the rabbit cages for sale range from small to smaller. They look fine in the store. A rabbit sits in one, and it doesn't appear cramped in the moment. But watch that rabbit for an hour: it cannot run, cannot binky (the full-body leap-and-twist that indicates a happy rabbit), cannot fully stretch, and cannot exhibit any of the behaviors that constitute normal rabbit life. A rabbit in an inadequate enclosure is a rabbit whose physical and psychological needs are being incompletely met every day of its life.
The British Rabbit Council and the Rabbit Welfare Association both specify a minimum of 8 square feet of living space plus 24 square feet of exercise area -- and these are minimums, not ideals. The Humane Society of the United States recommends housing that allows free movement at all times, not timed exercise sessions in a pen.
The Skeletal Consequence of Confinement
Rabbits have extremely powerful hind legs and a relatively lightweight skeleton. This combination means they require space to run and exercise -- without it, the muscles atrophy, the bone density decreases, and the rabbit develops osteoporosis and spinal problems that become apparent as it ages. A rabbit that never runs never develops the muscle mass needed to support safe landing from jumps -- one of the leading causes of spinal fracture in pet rabbits is a startled rabbit jumping out of arms or off a table, and muscle weakness from confinement makes these injuries more likely.
Regular access to large exercise space is not enrichment -- it is a basic requirement for skeletal health in a species designed to run from predators in open fields.
Housing Options That Actually Work
The most space-efficient approach for indoor rabbits is a large exercise pen (XL dog exercise pen, 36-48 inches tall to prevent jumping out) configured to enclose a minimum of 24-32 square feet of floor space, with a small enclosed sleeping area inside (a covered box or crate with a soft mat). This setup costs less than a large rabbit cage, provides dramatically more space, and can be configured around a room corner to maximize floor area without taking over the living room.
Free-roaming rabbits -- rabbits with access to a rabbit-proofed room or entire floor of a home -- demonstrate the most natural behavior and the best health outcomes. Rabbit-proofing requires covering all electrical cords (chewing live cords is a leading cause of rabbit death), blocking access under furniture, and protecting baseboards and chair legs with plastic covers or cardboard. Rabbits chew; plan for this before letting them roam.
Flooring, Litter, and Setup Details
Wire flooring -- still found in some rabbit hutches -- causes sore hocks (ulcerative pododermatitis), a painful skin condition on the rear feet from chronic pressure on wire. All resting and living areas should have solid flooring covered with soft material: fleece liners, interlocking foam tiles, or hay. Litter boxes filled with paper-based litter (Yesterday's News, Carefresh) and covered with a layer of hay encourage rabbits to eat hay while using the box -- addressing two needs simultaneously.
Rabbits are most active at dawn and dusk (crepuscular), so access to exercise space during these windows matters more than any random one-hour exercise period. A rabbit that is confined when it is naturally most active and released when it wants to rest will not use its exercise time effectively and will still exhibit confinement-related behaviors like bar-chewing, circling, and stereotypic running patterns.
