Sugar Glider Health Guide
Sugar gliders are exotic marsupials with specialized dietary and social needs that most exotic pet chains dramatically understate. The most common cause of death in captive sugar gliders is metabolic bone disease from calcium-phosphorus imbalance -- a preventable condition that requires understanding their nutritional requirements. With correct husbandry, sugar gliders live 10-15 years.

Dietary requirements: the calcium-phosphorus ratio
The most critical number in sugar glider nutrition is the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio: it must be 2:1 or higher (calcium:phosphorus). The standard pet store diet of mealworms and fruit creates a dangerous inversion -- mealworms are extremely high in phosphorus (ratio approximately 1:18), and fruit provides little calcium. This imbalance prevents calcium absorption, causing metabolic bone disease within months.
Established feeding plans developed by veterinarians and sugar glider organizations include the BML (Bourbon's Modified Leadbeater's) diet and the TPG (The Pet Glider) diet. Both combine protein (hard-boiled egg, yogurt), fruit, vegetables, and a vitamin supplement. The Wombaroo sugar glider food is a commercially complete alternative. Feed approximately 15-20% of body weight nightly -- sugar gliders are nocturnal and eat at night. Fresh water in a sipper bottle must always be available.
Social needs are not optional
Sugar gliders are highly social marsupials that live in colonies of 10-15 in the wild. A lone sugar glider is a stressed sugar glider -- they develop self-mutilation (barbering fur, chewing limbs), over-grooming of cagemates, and chronic stress-induced illness. Keep a minimum of two sugar gliders together. Same-sex pairs work well; if keeping a male-female pair, neuter the male to prevent continuous breeding.
Crabbing (a hissing-clicking alarm vocalization), puffing up, and biting upon waking are normal defensive behaviors in newly acquired gliders. This is not aggression -- it's a startled prey animal response. Pouch bonding (carrying the glider in a bonding pouch under your clothing during the day) desensitizes them to your scent and presence within 2-4 weeks.
Enclosure requirements
The minimum enclosure for two sugar gliders is 24" x 24" x 36" (height is most important -- gliders climb and glide vertically). Bar spacing must be 1/2 inch maximum to prevent escapes and head-trapping injuries. Wire mesh floors cause foot entrapment injuries -- line the bottom or use solid flooring. The cage must be in a room maintained between 65-80 degrees F; temperatures below 60 degrees F can induce torpor and hypothermia.
Provide: multiple sleeping pouches (fleece fabric, no loose threads), climbing branches and ropes, a wheel (11-inch diameter minimum, solid track to prevent tail and limb entrapment), and foraging opportunities. Remove and replace fleece pouches weekly to maintain hygiene.
Common health problems
Metabolic bone disease (MBD): hind leg paralysis, soft jaw, inability to glide -- caused by calcium-phosphorus imbalance. Emergency veterinary calcium supplementation and diet correction can arrest progression but cannot reverse bone damage. Prevention is essential.
Self-mutilation: raw wounds on the genitals, tail, or limbs -- usually caused by loneliness, stress, or an underlying infection. Requires veterinary evaluation plus husbandry correction. An e-collar prevents further damage during healing.
Cloacal prolapse: pink tissue protruding from the vent -- a veterinary emergency requiring immediate treatment within hours. Causes include chronic stress, inappropriate diet, or injury. Keep moist with saline while transporting to emergency care.
Find a veterinarian experienced with exotic marsupials before acquiring sugar gliders, not after -- most general practice vets have limited sugar glider experience.
Finding an exotic vet
The Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV) maintains a directory at aemv.org. Establish care before an emergency arises -- exotic mammal vets are scarce in many areas, and a sugar glider crisis develops faster than a standard appointment can be scheduled.
