For many greys, steadiness beats excitement. Predictable light cycles, real foraging work, and calm interaction often do more for behavior than endlessly adding new tricks or stimulation.
Feather plucking, shutdown behavior, chronic screaming, or sudden appetite change in an African grey should be taken seriously because stress and medical issues often overlap.
African grey parrots live 40β60 years in captivity and have the cognitive and emotional capacity of a 4β5-year-old human child. They are the most intelligent pet birds and the most demanding. They require 3β4 hours of daily interaction minimum, a complex, varied diet, large cage space, and mental stimulation that prevents feather-destructive behavior. African greys are not recommended for first-time bird owners.

Two Species: Congo vs. Timneh
Two African grey subspecies are kept as pets:
- Congo African Grey (Psittacus erithacus erithacus): Larger (12β14 inches, 400β650 g), bright red tail, light grey body, lighter beak. Most common in the pet trade. The classic βAfrican grey.β
- Timneh African Grey (Psittacus erithacus timneh): Smaller (9β11 inches, 275β375 g), dark maroon tail, darker grey, pinkish upper mandible. Earlier talkers in some reports. Slightly less well-known but equally intelligent and arguably a bit calmer temperamentally.
Both species are CITES Appendix I (international trade restricted); all birds sold legally in the U.S. are captive-bred. Never purchase a wild-caught grey.
Intelligence and Emotional Complexity
Dr. Irene Pepperbergβs decades of research with Alex, a Congo African grey, demonstrated that African greys understand concepts of color, shape, number, and sameness/difference β not just mimicry. Alex used approximately 100 words functionally, asked questions, and expressed frustration. African greys in home settings exhibit:
- Vocabulary of 200β1,000 words in highly trained birds, used contextually
- Understanding of cause and effect
- Emotional sensitivity to household dynamics, changes in routine, and owner stress
- Long memory for both positive and traumatic experiences
- Problem-solving ability with novel objects
This cognitive capacity means African greys become easily bored, frustrated, and emotionally dysregulated without adequate stimulation. Feather-destructive behavior (FDB) β plucking or chewing feathers β affects 15β40% of pet African greys and is often a behavioral response to inadequate environment, not a medical problem.
Cage Requirements
Minimum cage: 36 x 24 x 48 inches. Larger is strongly preferred. Bar spacing: 1 to 1.5 inches. The cage should be large enough for the bird to fully extend wings without touching bars. Heavy-gauge stainless steel is ideal (no zinc or lead, no powder coating that flakes). African greys are destructive β cheap cages will be dismantled.
Provide a play stand outside the cage for out-of-cage time. The cage is sleeping quarters and security base, not the majority of the birdβs living space.
Diet
African greys are uniquely prone to hypocalcemia (low blood calcium) compared to other parrots. This causes tremors, seizures, and cardiac issues and is most common in birds on seed-heavy diets without adequate calcium sources.
Correct diet:
- 50β60% pellets: Harrison's High Potency or Adult Lifetime (appropriate for greys), Roudybush. Avoid colored pellets with artificial dyes in a bird prone to sensitivity.
- 30β40% vegetables and leafy greens: Dark leafy greens critical for calcium. Kale, collard greens, broccoli are particularly high in calcium. Offer daily.
- 10% cooked grains and legumes: Brown rice, quinoa, lentils, small amounts of cooked egg (protein source).
- 5% or less seeds and nuts: Walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts β high-value training treats only. Seeds are high fat and nutritionally inadequate for a bird of this size.
Never feed: avocado (fatal), onion and garlic, chocolate, alcohol, high-sodium foods, dairy products (birds are lactose intolerant), raw meat, and fruit pits/seeds.
Fresh water daily. African greys may dip food in water; change water when contaminated.
Socialization and Mental Stimulation
African greys form strong pair bonds with a primary caregiver and can become problematically one-person birds. Multi-person socialization from an early age prevents this. Birds handled only by one person from the start frequently become aggressive toward all others β a significant problem when the primary owner is unavailable.
Daily requirement: 3β4 hours of interaction outside the cage. This is not negotiable. A grey left alone in a cage for 8β10 hours daily will begin feather-destructive behavior within months to years.
Enrichment: foraging toys (hide food in multiple layers of wrapping, paper, boxes), puzzle feeders, novel objects to investigate and destroy, training sessions (touch targeting, color identification, object naming). Rotate toys weekly. Interaction with nature through a safe outdoor aviary or window perch is valuable.
African greys are extremely routine-dependent. Dramatic changes in schedule, household members, or environment cause significant stress. Introduce changes gradually.
Feather-Destructive Behavior (FDB)
The most heartbreaking and common welfare problem in pet African greys. The bird plucks or chews its own feathers β sometimes to the point of self-mutilation of skin. FDB is almost always multifactorial:
- Inadequate socialization and interaction time
- Medical causes (feather follicle infection, Bornavirus/PDD, psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), bacterial/fungal skin infection, internal disease causing pruritis)
- Nutritional deficiency (vitamin A deficiency, low humidity causing dry skin)
- Psychological causes (anxiety, boredom, previous trauma)
All FDB should be evaluated by an avian vet before assuming it is purely behavioral. PBFD (a fatal herpesvirus) must be ruled out. Treatment depends on cause: behavioral modification and environmental enrichment for psychological FDB; medical treatment for organic causes.
Lifespan and Long-Term Commitment
African greys regularly live 40β60 years in captivity. Buying an African grey is a life decision β many outlive their owners and require estate planning. Before purchasing a grey, confirm who would care for the bird if you could not. Rehomed African greys frequently develop psychological problems from the stress of losing their primary bond. The African grey rescue and rehoming population is large precisely because buyers underestimate the 40β60-year commitment.
