Bird First Aid: Stabilize, Warm, TransportโThen Let the Vet Take Over
Bird first aid is about stabilization and time-buying, not amateur diagnosis. A calm, warm bird reaching an avian veterinarian quickly is the real goal.

In many bird emergencies, the most valuable first-aid skill is restraint: do the few supportive things that help, then stop and get the bird to qualified care.
Birds often hide illness until late. If signs are obvious, the situation is usually already serious enough that delay is the biggest avoidable mistake.
Birds are prey animals that instinctively mask illness until they are severely compromised -- by the time a bird looks sick, it has typically been unwell for days or weeks. When a bird finally shows obvious distress -- fluffed feathers, sitting on the cage floor, open-mouth breathing, or complete loss of balance -- it is a medical emergency. First aid before reaching an avian veterinarian focuses on a single goal: keeping the bird warm and calm long enough to receive professional care. Do not attempt to diagnose or treat at home beyond basic supportive stabilization.

Warmth Is the First Priority
Ill birds lose the ability to maintain body temperature. Normal body temperature for most parrots and songbirds is 104 to 108 degrees F. A bird that is fluffed, lethargic, or cold to the touch is hypothermic and needs supplemental heat immediately. Create a hospital enclosure: a clean container (cardboard box, small carrier) with ventilation holes. Heat one side of the enclosure to approximately 85 to 90 degrees F using a heat lamp (75 to 100 watt incandescent bulb positioned 12 to 18 inches away), a reptile heat pad under half the box, or a heating pad on low setting under half the container. The heated end must not cover the entire enclosure -- the bird must be able to move away from heat if it gets too warm. A bird that is panting at the heat source is overheating; reduce temperature.
Reduce Stress
Stress accelerates physiological deterioration in ill birds. Keep the bird in a quiet, dimly lit room away from other pets, loud noises, and excessive human activity. Covering the container with a light towel reduces visual stimulation. Limit handling to the minimum required for assessment. Do not offer food by force; an anorexic bird should be seen by a vet, not syringe-fed at home without veterinary guidance (aspiration risk is significant).
What Not to Do
Do not: administer any medication without veterinary instruction (aspirin, Tylenol, and human medications are toxic to birds at any dose); give vitamin supplements not already part of the bird's routine (excess fat-soluble vitamins cause toxicity); submerge or spray water on a hypothermic bird; separate a bird from its flock companion unless the companion is attacking it (flock separation is additional stress); or wait more than a few hours for any bird showing breathing difficulty, blood loss, seizure, or inability to stand.
Bleeding
Apply gentle direct pressure to external wounds with a clean cloth. For blood feather (new feather still containing blood supply) breakage that bleeds continuously, the feather may need extraction -- a procedure best done by a veterinarian due to the risk of follicle damage if done incorrectly. Do not apply blood-stop powder or cornstarch to wounds near the eyes or nares (nostrils). Head to the vet; do not delay for bleeding from a blood feather or any wound that does not stop within 5 minutes of direct pressure.
Toxic Fume Exposure
Birds are extraordinarily sensitive to airborne toxins. Overheated nonstick (PTFE-containing) cookware releases fumes detectable at high heat that cause acute respiratory failure in birds within minutes; birds in homes where PTFE fumes were released may die before owners notice a problem. Self-cleaning oven cycles, overheated cooking oil, and aerosols (cooking sprays, candles, air fresheners) are additional risks. If you suspect fume exposure: move the bird immediately to fresh air, put it in a warm, quiet transport container, and drive to an emergency avian vet while keeping car windows cracked.
