Because parrots hide weakness, the owner who notices small changes early often does far more for a macaw than the owner who tries to manage obvious illness at home once the bird is crashing.
Breathing changes, persistent fluffing, weight loss, sudden weakness, or major droppings changes can all justify prompt avian-vet attention in a species that may look stable until it is not.
Macaws are long-lived parrots (50-80 years in captivity) but face specific health challenges including Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD), psittacosis, feather-destructive behavior, heavy metal toxicity, and nutritional deficiencies from seed-only diets. Annual veterinary exams with an avian-specialist vet, a pellet-based diet, enrichment to prevent boredom-driven feather destruction, and a toxin-free environment are the foundations of macaw health.

Proventricular Dilatation Disease: The Wasting Disease of Parrots
PDD (caused by Avian Bornavirus) affects the nerves controlling the proventriculus and ventriculus (stomach chambers). Birds lose the ability to digest food properly, resulting in weight loss despite eating, passage of undigested seeds in droppings, and eventually neurological signs (seizures, ataxia). No cure exists. Diagnosis requires biopsy or serology combined with clinical signs. Management involves anti-inflammatory therapy (celecoxib), highly digestible foods, and supportive care. An infected bird can shed virus to other birds for years without showing symptoms.
Psittacosis: A Zoonotic Disease You Can Catch
Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci) infects all parrot species including macaws and can transmit to humans. In birds: respiratory distress, green or yellow-brown droppings, lethargy, eye discharge. In humans: flu-like illness that can progress to severe pneumonia. New birds should be quarantined 30-45 days before joining a flock. Diagnosis via PCR testing of choanal/cloacal swabs. Treatment: doxycycline for 45 days. Most birds recover fully if treated early. Report suspected cases to your veterinarian -- psittacosis is a notifiable disease in most states.
Feather-Destructive Behavior in Macaws
Feather plucking and chewing affects an estimated 10-15% of captive parrots. Causes include: boredom (insufficient enrichment), inappropriate social environment (insufficient flock interaction), medical issues (bacterial/fungal skin infections, Giardia, heavy metal toxicity), or behavioral/psychological factors. Work-up should rule out medical causes first -- skin culture, heavy metal screen, Giardia PCR -- before assuming behavioral etiology. Enrichment strategies: foraging toys that require 3-4 hours of work to extract food, social time outside the cage, and consistent daily routine. Recovered feathers often regrow if the underlying cause is addressed early.
Heavy Metal Toxicity: Lead and Zinc Poisoning
Macaws chew everything. Lead and zinc toxicity from ingesting hardware, paint chips, galvanized cage wire, costume jewelry, or foil causes neurological signs (seizures, disorientation, head tilt), green urine/droppings, and death if untreated. Emergency treatment: chelation therapy with CaEDTA or DMSA. Prevention: use stainless steel or powder-coated (zinc-free) cages, remove all lead-containing items from reach, inspect new environmental objects. Blood lead levels above 20 mcg/dL require treatment; levels above 50 mcg/dL are acutely dangerous.
Diet: Seeds Are Not Enough
A diet of sunflower seeds and peanuts is nutritionally deficient -- too high in fat, too low in Vitamin A, calcium, and essential amino acids. Vitamin A deficiency causes blunted choanal papillae, respiratory infections, and skin abnormalities. The transition from seeds to pellets is critical: offer pellets (Harrison's, Roudybush, Zupreem) as 60-70% of diet, with fresh vegetables (leafy greens, bell peppers, carrots), fruit (10-20%), and limited nuts. Never feed avocado, chocolate, caffeine, or alcohol. Onions and garlic cause hemolytic anemia. The transition can take weeks; patience and gradual mixing of pellets with seeds helps reluctant birds accept the change.
