Iron storage disease: the same risk as toucans
Mynahs belong to the softbill dietary category and share the toucan's fatal sensitivity to dietary iron. In the wild, Hill Mynahs eat fruit, insects, nectar, and flowers -- a diet extremely low in iron. In captivity, feeding a mynah standard parrot food, commercial softbill diets not specifically formulated for low-iron requirements, or high-iron fruits (bananas, dark grapes, dried fruit, citrus) causes iron to accumulate in the liver. Hemochromatosis presents as progressive lethargy, abdominal distension from liver enlargement, respiratory distress, and sudden death -- often without obvious warning signs until the disease is advanced. There is no cure for advanced iron storage disease; preventing it requires lifelong dietary management from the first day of ownership.
The appropriate diet: a low-iron softbill pellet (Mazuri Low Iron Softbill Diet, or similar) as the foundation (60 to 70% of intake), supplemented with low-iron fresh fruits (papaya, melon, pear, blueberries in moderation) and live or frozen-thawed insects (mealworms, crickets, waxworms) as protein. Annual blood iron panels (serum iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation) from a vet experienced in softbill medicine are essential preventive monitoring.
Housing requirements
Mynahs are active, boisterous birds that need large enclosures. A single mynah needs a minimum 3-foot by 3-foot by 4-foot cage; larger is strongly recommended. Mynahs produce significant mess -- they fling food enthusiastically and have liquid droppings (high fruit diet). Easy-clean surfaces and catch trays are practical necessities. Mynahs benefit from daily out-of-cage time in a bird-safe, mynahproof room (they will chew electrical cords, explore any accessible surface, and get into anything left open). They are not typically social with other species of birds and should be housed singly or with other mynahs in appropriately sized aviaries.

Mynahs learn speech through repetition during the critical period (roughly 3 to 9 months old) when they are most receptive to sound imprinting. Single words and short phrases spoken directly to the bird, clearly and consistently, in the same tone and context, are absorbed most readily. Play recordings only as a supplement to direct interaction -- mynahs learn better from interactive speech than from recordings alone. The tonal accuracy that makes mynahs remarkable requires hearing the same voice pattern many times; varied recordings produce less accurate mimicry than consistent human speech. Mynahs typically begin speaking between 6 and 12 months of age; birds not speaking by 14 months are unlikely to develop speech.
Bathing and hygiene
Mynahs love to bathe and should have a wide, shallow water dish for bathing changed daily. They also benefit from gentle misting or a warm shower. The beak and wattles (the yellow fleshy patches around the eyes and behind the beak) should be examined weekly for signs of overgrowth or infection -- wattle infections can occur and require veterinary treatment. Feet should be examined for mite infestation and bumblefoot (pressure sores from inappropriate perching); perches of varying diameter (1/2 to 1 inch) reduce foot pressure sores.
Finding a responsible source
Wild-caught mynahs are still illegally traded in parts of Asia. In the US and Europe, reputable sources are captive-bred birds from licensed aviculturists. Wild-caught birds are stressed, often carry parasites and bacterial infections, and rarely tame successfully. Always request import documentation and breeding records. The softbill and mynah keeper community (accessible through softbill societies and avicultural groups) is the best source for captive-bred birds from experienced keepers who understand their dietary needs.
