π‘ Most fish diseases are driven by stress from poor water quality. A fish in clean, stable water with proper nutrition is remarkably resistant to disease. Prevention is always cheaper and more effective than treatment.
β οΈ Velvet can kill an entire tank within 48 hours of the first visible signs. Unlike Ich (which has a longer life cycle), Velvet requires immediate, aggressive treatment. Dimming the lights and seeing gold dust on your fish is an emergency.
The three most common fish diseases in home aquariums are ich (white spot disease, caused by the parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis), fin rot (bacterial erosion of fins), and velvet (Oodinium, a fine golden-dust parasitic infection). All three are stress-related -- healthy fish in properly maintained tanks rarely contract them. Treatment involves identifying the disease correctly, quarantining affected fish when possible, and treating with appropriate medication after fixing underlying water quality.

Raising temperature to 82Β°F speeds up the cycle, cycling the parasite through the vulnerable theront stage faster. Treat for 10β14 days minimum after last visible spot disappears.
Fin Rot
Fin rot is almost always secondary β healthy fish with good water quality very rarely develop it spontaneously. The typical pathway: fin damage (fin-nipping, sharp decor, rough handling) creates an entry point for bacteria; poor water quality suppresses immune function; infection establishes and spreads inward.
Treatment priority: (1) Fix water quality. Ammonia, nitrite, or chronic high nitrate prevents recovery. (2) Remove the source of stress (aggressor fish, sharp decor). (3) Treat with antibiotic if the infection has progressed beyond the fin edge into the fin base or body.
Velvet (Gold Dust Disease)
Velvet is caused by a photosynthetic dinoflagellate β it needs light to survive. This is why darkening the tank (covering all sides and top for 3 days) helps treatment. Velvet is frequently missed until infestation is severe because the golden dust is only visible in raking light (shine a flashlight at a sharp angle across the body in a dark room).
Copper medications are effective. Remove all invertebrates before treatment β copper is lethal to shrimp, snails, and crabs at concentrations too low to affect fish.
