Amazon Milk Frog topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.

The Amazon milk frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) is a large, striking tree frog native to the Amazon River basin, reaching 2.5--4 inches as adults. They are named for the white, milky defensive secretion they produce when stressed -- not for any milk-related diet. Their bold black-and-white patterning on juveniles transitions to a subtler gray and brown as adults. They are considered one of the better tree frogs for intermediate keepers: more tolerant of handling than dart frogs, more visually rewarding than basic green tree frogs.

Wild Ecology
Amazon milk frogs are arboreal and spend their lives in the forest canopy, descending to breed in water-filled tree hollows called phytotelmata. They are nocturnal predators of insects and other small invertebrates. Males call loudly -- a distinctive, resonant croak that carries far through the canopy -- to attract females for breeding.
Enclosure Design
A pair or trio of Amazon milk frogs needs a minimum 18 x 18 x 24-inch arboreal enclosure (tall rather than wide). Because they are arboreal, vertical space and climbing structure matter far more than floor space. Fill the enclosure with sturdy branches, cork bark tubes (excellent for hiding), and robust live or artificial plants. They prefer sleeping tucked into a tube or crevice.
Temperature: 75--85 degrees F during the day; a nighttime drop to 65--70 degrees F is tolerated and may encourage breeding. Humidity: 50--70% during the day; spike to 80--100% with evening misting. They are more forgiving of humidity fluctuations than many tropical tree frogs.
Lighting and UVB
Milk frogs are nocturnal but benefit from a low-output UVB source (5.0 or 6% UVB bulb) based on recent amphibian UVB research. A 12-hour light cycle maintains circadian rhythms. Avoid strong direct lighting -- milk frogs prefer shaded hiding spots during the day.
Feeding
Feed crickets, roaches, and hornworms as staples; waxworms and silkworms as occasional treats. Adults eat every 2--3 days; juveniles every day or every other day. Gut-load feeder insects with high-quality commercial gut-load or fresh vegetables before feeding. Dust insects with calcium + D3 at every feeding; use a complete vitamin supplement 2x per month.
Handling
Amazon milk frogs are more tolerant of handling than most tree frogs, but the defensive secretion can cause irritation if it contacts mucous membranes. Wash hands before and after handling. Never handle a milk frog with lotions, sunscreen, or insect repellent on your hands -- amphibians absorb chemicals through their skin readily.
Health
Chytrid fungus (Bd) is the primary disease concern. Captive-bred animals from established breeders carry low risk but should be quarantined before introduction to existing animals. Red-leg syndrome (bacterial septicemia) appears as reddening of the ventral skin, lethargy, and anorexia -- veterinary treatment with appropriate antibiotics is necessary. Metabolic bone disease from improper calcium supplementation causes skeletal deformities; supplement consistently. Impaction from accidentally consumed loose substrate is prevented by using large-particle substrates (no coco coir alone -- use chunky mixes) and feeding insects in a smooth-sided feeding container.
