Ball Python Care topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
Ball pythons are the most popular pet snake and can live 25β30+ years. They need a 4 x 2 x 2-foot enclosure as adults (not a glass aquarium with a screen top β they require high humidity and heat retention). Temperature gradient: 88β92Β°F warm side, 76β80Β°F cool side. They eat pre-killed or frozen/thawed rodents, not live prey. Feeding refusals lasting weeks are common and usually not medical emergencies.

Enclosure Requirements
Adult ball pythons (typically 3β5 feet, occasionally larger in females) need a 4 x 2 x 2-foot enclosure as a minimum. Hatchlings and juveniles can be kept in smaller tubs (shoebox size to 6-quart tubs) initially β small spaces make them feel more secure and eat more reliably.
Why glass aquariums with screen lids fail:
- Screen lids allow heat and humidity to escape. Ball pythons require 60β80% relative humidity. A screen-top aquarium in most homes maintains 20β40% β chronically low humidity causes shedding problems and respiratory irritation.
- Heat efficiency is poor; maintaining adequate temperatures requires more powerful heating equipment and costs more to run.
Better enclosure options: PVC enclosures (Zen Habitats, Vision Cages), ABS plastic tubs, melamine wood enclosures with sealed joints. These retain heat and humidity efficiently.
Substrate for humidity retention: cypress mulch, coco coir/topsoil mix, or bioactive substrate (60β40 topsoil/play sand). Paper towel and reptile carpet do not retain humidity and require more frequent misting.
Hides: minimum two per enclosure (one warm side, one cool side). Snakes feel secure when fully enclosed β a hide that the snake can just fit into is better than a large open box. Cheap inverted plastic flowerpot bottoms, half-logs, or commercial hides all work.
Temperature and Heating

Heat sources: radiant heat panels (best for overhead heat), under-tank heaters with a thermostat (use for belly heat), ceramic heat emitters. Always use a thermostat with any heat source β an unregulated heat mat can overheat and cause thermal burns through substrate. No basking light is required. Ball pythons are crepuscular to nocturnal and do not bask under bright lights in captivity. A normal room light cycle provides adequate photoperiod.
Humidity
Target: 60β80% relative humidity. During shedding: 70β80% minimum. Measure with a digital hygrometer inside the enclosure, not a cheap analog dial hygrometer (analog hygrometers are notoriously inaccurate).
Maintaining humidity: moist substrate, water bowl large enough for the snake to soak in (half-submerged at minimum), occasional light misting of the substrate rather than the snake directly, and a well-sealed enclosure that minimizes air exchange.
Feeding
Ball pythons eat pre-killed or frozen/thawed (F/T) rodents. Never feed live prey β live rodents fight back and have inflicted serious, occasionally fatal wounds on snakes. A pre-killed or F/T mouse or rat is safer, more humane, and usually accepted readily.
Prey size: The prey item should be approximately as wide as the widest part of the snakeβs body. A mouse too small provides inadequate nutrition; a prey item too large risks regurgitation.
Typical adult diet:
- Hatchlings: one pinky or fuzzy mouse every 5β7 days
- Juveniles: one adult mouse or small rat every 7β10 days
- Adults: one appropriately sized rat every 10β14 days
Thaw frozen rodents in warm water (not microwave, not hot water β creates hot spots). Offer at dusk or later. Use feeding tongs, not fingers. Do not handle the snake for 48β72 hours after feeding β regurgitation from handling too soon is a stress response.
Feeding Refusals
Ball pythons are notorious for going off feed. Refusals lasting 4β12 weeks are common and usually not medical emergencies. Common reasons:
- Breeding season (OctoberβMarch): males especially may refuse for months
- Shedding cycle: snakes often refuse within 1β2 weeks of a shed
- Stress from handling, environmental change, or incorrect temperatures
- Humidity too low
- Prey size wrong or prey type changed
What to do during a refusal: ensure temperatures and humidity are correct, offer prey at night, leave the prey item in the enclosure overnight and remove in the morning, try a different prey size or prey species (some ball pythons prefer gerbils or quail initially, though rodents are preferred long-term). Concern is warranted if the snake loses more than 10% of body weight or shows other symptoms (mucus in the mouth, wheezing).
Common Health Issues
- Respiratory infection (RI): Wheezing, clicking, mucus around the mouth and nares, lethargy, open-mouth breathing. Cause: chronic low humidity, low temperatures, or bacterial infection. Treatment: raise temperatures and humidity immediately; antibiotic injection or oral medication from a reptile vet. Untreated RIs kill.
- Mites (Ophionyssus natricis): Tiny black or red mites visible on the snake and in the enclosure water dish (mites drown in water). Cause skin irritation, anemia in heavy infestations. Treatment: Frontline spray (diluted) or reptile-specific mite treatment (ProVent-A-Mite, Reptile Spray). Quarantine the enclosure; clean and disinfect everything.
- Inclusion body disease (IBD): Arenavirus causing progressive neurological disease in boas and pythons. Stargazing (head pointing upward), corkscrewing, inability to right itself. No cure; highly contagious. Euthanize to prevent spread.
- Stuck shed (dysecdysis): Retained shed from low humidity. Soak in warm water 20β30 minutes; retained eye caps (spectacles) require vet removal. Never peel shed from an unwilling snake β skin underneath is often still attached.
