Bearded Dragon Care topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
Bearded dragons require high-output UVB lighting β without it they develop metabolic bone disease (MBD) within months. Adult beardies need a 120-gallon enclosure minimum (4 x 2 x 2 feet). They are omnivores: insects plus vegetables every day when young; more vegetables than insects as adults. Basking temperature: 100β110Β°F. They brumate (hibernate-like dormancy) in winter, which alarms new owners but is normal.

UVB: The Most Common Fatal Mistake
UVB radiation enables bearded dragons to synthesize vitamin D3 in the skin, which regulates calcium metabolism. Without adequate D3, calcium cannot be absorbed from the diet regardless of how much calcium is provided. The result is metabolic bone disease: rubbery, deformed bones, tremors, seizures, and eventual paralysis.
UVB requirements for bearded dragons:
- High-output UVB (T5 HO 10.0 or 12% equivalent): Arcadia Dragon Lamp 12% or ReptiSun 10.0 T5 HO
- UVB must reach the basking area directly β glass and most plastic block UVB. The screen mesh of an enclosure lid reduces UVB by 30β50%; place the bulb inside the enclosure or account for this in bulb selection.
- Bulb distance from basking spot: T5 HO 12% at 12β18 inches provides Ferguson Zone 3 UVI (recommended for beardies). Check with a Solarmeter 6.5 if available.
- Replace UVB bulbs every 6β12 months even if the visible light output remains normal β UVB output degrades before visible light.
Enclosure Size
- Hatchlings to 10 inches: 40-gallon breeder (36 x 18 inches)
- Juveniles 10β16 inches: 75-gallon
- Adults (18β24 inches): 120-gallon minimum (48 x 24 x 24 inches). This is the minimum for an adult beardie to thermoregulate properly and have room to turn around and move.
Front-opening enclosures (PVC or ABS plastic) retain heat better than glass aquariums and are easier to clean. Popular brands: Zen Habitats, Vision Cages, Reptile Systems.
Temperature Requirements
- Basking spot surface temperature: 100β110Β°F (hatchlings and juveniles) / 100β105Β°F (adults). Measure with an infrared temp gun directly on the basking surface, not ambient air temperature.
- Warm side ambient: 80β85Β°F
- Cool side ambient: 75β80Β°F
- Nighttime low: 65β70Β°F acceptable
Heat source: overhead incandescent or halogen basking bulb for surface heat. Ceramic heat emitters (CHE) or radiant heat panels for overnight warmth without light disruption. Avoid: colored basking bulbs (red, blue) β disrupts circadian rhythm. Hot rocks (cause thermal burns). Under-tank heaters are insufficient as the primary heat source for bearded dragons.
Diet by Age
Bearded dragons are omnivores, but the ratio of insects to plants changes with age:
- Hatchlings to 4 months: 70% insects / 30% vegetables. Feed insects 3 times daily (as many as will be eaten in 10β15 minutes each session).
- Juveniles 4β12 months: 60% insects / 40% vegetables. Feed insects twice daily.
- Sub-adults and adults (12+ months): 30% insects / 70% vegetables. Feed insects 3β5 times per week. Vegetables offered daily.
Feeder insects: Dubia roaches (best protein-to-fat ratio), crickets, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL/Phoenix worms β high in calcium, excellent supplemental feeder). Waxworms and superworms are treats only. Mealworms: limited to adults; the hard chitin is difficult for juveniles to digest.
Vegetables: Collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion greens (staples). Kale in moderate amounts. Squash, bell peppers, snap peas, shredded carrot as variety. Avoid spinach (oxalic acid binds calcium), avocado (toxic), iceberg lettuce (no nutrition), and most fruit (high sugar β treat once weekly maximum).
Dusting: Calcium without D3 on most feeder insects (UVB handles D3 synthesis if lighting is adequate). Multivitamin with D3 once weekly. If no UVB, calcium with D3 at every feeding.
Brumation
Bearded dragons brumate in response to shortened winter daylight and cooler temperatures. Brumating dragons eat less, sleep more, and may appear lethargic or completely unresponsive for weeks to months. This is normal. Signs that distinguish brumation from illness:
- Weight stable or very slowly declining (illness causes rapid weight loss)
- Eyes clear and bright when awake (illness causes sunken, dull eyes)
- Normal color (illness may cause darkening, blackening of the beard)
- Responds to gentle handling when disturbed
Offer water and a small amount of food weekly during brumation. Some dragons eat; many refuse. Do not force-feed a brumating dragon.
Common Health Issues
- Metabolic bone disease (MBD): Inadequate UVB or calcium. Rubbery jaw, bone deformities, tremors, seizures. Emergency vet care. Completely preventable.
- Atadenovirus (βStargazing disease,β ADV): Incurable neurological adenovirus. Symptoms: head twisting upward (stargazing), seizures, lethargy, death in juveniles. Some adult carriers show no symptoms. DNA test to diagnose. No treatment beyond supportive care.
- Yellow fungus disease (Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii, CANV): Aggressive fungal infection causing yellow-brown necrotic lesions. Spreads quickly; often fatal. Antifungal treatment (voriconazole) may slow but rarely cures. Infected animals should be isolated.
- Impaction: Loose substrate (sand, walnut, bark) ingested and causing intestinal blockage. Symptoms: no feces for 2+ weeks, lethargy, abdominal swelling. Vet intervention required.
- Parasites (Pinworms, Coccidia): Common in wild-caught beardies and in stressed captive animals. Fecal flotation test diagnoses. Metronidazole or fenbendazole for treatment under vet guidance.
