Box Turtle Care topics almost always come back to the same foundation: enclosure fit, measurable heat, lighting matched to the species, and calm daily observation. When those basics drift, feeding, shedding, and behavior usually drift too.
If a reptile stops eating, sheds badly, hides constantly, or shows mouth / eye / breathing changes, treat the environment check and vet triage as one workflow. Husbandry errors and medical problems often overlap instead of occurring separately.
Box turtles are not aquatic turtles kept on land -- they are terrestrial species with specific humidity, temperature, substrate, and dietary requirements that differ fundamentally from water turtles. They also live 30-50 years in captivity with good care, meaning a box turtle is a multi-decade commitment. Wild-caught box turtles suffer high mortality in captivity; captive-bred animals are the ethical and practical choice.

Species Comparison
The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is the most commonly kept species. Adults reach 4.5-6 inches shell length, have highly domed carapaces, and show remarkable individual variation in pattern -- orange, yellow, and brown markings on dark backgrounds. Males typically have red irises; females brown. The Ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata) is smaller (4-5 inches), flatter-domed, and lives in prairie and grassland habitats requiring lower humidity than Easterns. The Three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis) is another common subspecies, more uniform in coloration and generally more docile.
All Terrapene species possess a hinged plastron (bottom shell) that closes completely -- the signature "box" characteristic. This defensive mechanism protects them from most predators. It also means they can survive remarkable physical insults that would kill other species.
Enclosure Requirements
Outdoor enclosures are strongly preferred for box turtles. A minimum outdoor pen for one adult: 4 x 8 feet, with walls at least 18 inches tall and buried 12 inches underground (box turtles are determined diggers and climbers). Include varied terrain: a hide, a shallow water dish for soaking, areas of full sun, and shaded areas with moist substrate. Outdoor turtles self-regulate temperature and receive appropriate UV radiation for vitamin D3 synthesis.
Indoor enclosures are acceptable in climates with harsh winters. Minimum indoor enclosure: 4 x 2 feet for one adult. Substrate: 4-6 inches of a mix of topsoil, coconut coir, and organic compost -- deep enough to allow partial burrowing. Eastern box turtles require 60-80% humidity maintained by substrate moisture and regular misting. Ornate box turtles tolerate 40-60% humidity. Ambient temperature: 70-85 degrees F with a warm basking area of 85-90 degrees F. UVB lighting (T5 HO 10.0 bulb) is essential for indoor turtles -- 12-14 hours daily in summer, 10-12 in winter.
Diet
Box turtles are omnivores. In the wild, diet varies by season and location: spring brings earthworms, snails, and slugs; summer adds berries, fungi, and insects; fall brings fallen fruit. Captive diet should reflect this variety. Protein (50% of diet in juveniles, 25-30% in adults): earthworms, crickets, mealworms, dubia roaches, pinky mice occasionally, cooked eggs, and low-fat meat. Vegetables (40-50% of adult diet): dark leafy greens (collard, turnip, mustard), squash, peppers, green beans. Fruit (10-15%): berries, melon, apple, papaya. Avoid spinach, beet greens, and chard in excess -- high oxalate content binds calcium.
Dust prey items and vegetables with calcium powder 3-5 times weekly and a reptile multivitamin once weekly. A cuttlebone left in the enclosure allows turtles to self-supplement calcium. Wild mushrooms are a natural food but cannot be identified safely for captive feeding; skip them.
Hibernation (Brumation)
Box turtles in temperate regions naturally brumate through winter. Captive turtles should be allowed to brumate if they are healthy adults -- brumation appears necessary for long-term reproductive success and may support longevity. Pre-brumation: fast for 3-4 weeks (to clear the gut), ensure the turtle is well-hydrated with soaking, and confirm healthy weight. Box turtles should not brumate if underweight, ill, or injured.
Outdoor turtles in appropriate climates can brumate naturally by burrowing. Indoor brumation: place the turtle in a box with moist substrate in an unheated garage or refrigerator set to 40-50 degrees F for 8-12 weeks. Check every 2-3 weeks; if weight drops more than 10%, soak and consider ending brumation early. Emergence in spring: gradually warm the enclosure and resume normal husbandry over 1-2 weeks.
Health Concerns
Respiratory infection presents as open-mouth breathing, mucus discharge, lethargy. Common cause: Mycoplasma or Herpesvirus in wild-caught animals; incorrect humidity/temperature in captive-bred. Vitamin A deficiency causes swollen eyelids, nasal discharge, and anorexia -- correct with dietary adjustment and vet-administered vitamin A injections if severe. Shell rot (ulcerative shell disease) from trauma or damp conditions requires veterinary debridement and topical antibiotic. Any box turtle not eating for more than 3 weeks outside of brumation warrants veterinary evaluation.
