They are also escape artists who will find every gap in a poorly-secured enclosure, need a 10-degree thermal gradient across their tank to regulate body temperature, and require prey items large enough in diameter to leave a noticeable lump after feeding. Get the husbandry right and you have arguably the ideal beginner snake. Get it wrong and you'll spend years wondering why your snake won't eat.

The Temperature Gradient That Runs Everything
Corn snakes are ectotherms -- they regulate body temperature behaviorally, moving between warm and cool zones throughout the day. This isn't optional enrichment. It's how they digest food, fight off pathogens, and process metabolic waste. A tank without a gradient is a tank where the snake cannot function normally.
Target temperatures: Warm side 85-88F (the basking area). Cool side 70-75F. Ambient nighttime temperature can drop to 65F. A digital thermometer with a probe on each end of the tank confirms the gradient is correct -- don't guess, and don't trust the stick-on thermometers that come with starter kits.
Heat sources: under-tank heater (UTH) controlled by a thermostat, ceramic heat emitter, or radiant heat panel. Never heat rocks (contact burns). No overhead incandescent bulbs as primary heat. The thermostat is essential -- an uncontrolled UTH will overheat and can cook a snake overnight.
Enclosure Size: Going Bigger Faster Than You Think
Hatchlings (under 18 inches) do well in 10-gallon tanks -- smaller spaces help them find food and feel secure. Adults need a minimum 40-gallon breeder (36 x 18 x 18 inches) by the time they reach 3 feet. Some keepers move to a 4 x 2 x 2 foot enclosure for large adults.
Provide two hides -- one on the warm side, one on the cool side -- so the snake can thermoregulate while staying hidden. A snake forced to choose between warmth and security will choose security and become cold and sick. Both hides need to fit the snake snugly: "snug" means tight enough that the snake can feel the walls around it, not loose enough to pace in circles.
Screen-top enclosures work but lose humidity fast in dry climates. Partially covering the screen (aluminum foil or a piece of plexiglass over the cool half) raises humidity without eliminating ventilation.
Humidity: The Difference Between Clean Sheds and Retained Eye Caps
Corn snakes need 40-60% relative humidity. Below 40% causes retained sheds (dysecdysis). Stuck eye caps are the most dangerous form of retained shed -- they can cause blindness if not addressed promptly. Above 70% sustained humidity causes scale rot and respiratory infections.
Shed behavior: eyes turn blue-gray ("in blue"), the snake becomes opaque overall, hides more, and refuses food. 7-10 days later it clears, then sheds within 48-72 hours. Don't handle during this period -- vision is impaired and snakes in shed are defensive. A damp hide (a hide with moist sphagnum moss inside) helps snakes shed in one piece.
If the shed comes off in multiple pieces, raise humidity for the next cycle. If an eye cap is retained after two warm soaks, an exotic vet removes it safely -- don't pull.
Feeding: Frozen-Thawed, Right-Sized, and Patient
The prey item should be as wide as the widest part of the snake's body. Hatchlings eat pinky mice; juveniles eat fuzzy or small adult mice; large adults eat adult mice or small rats. Too small and the snake doesn't get adequate nutrition; too large and regurgitation risk increases.
Frozen-thawed prey is strongly preferred over live. Live mice injure snakes -- a cornered mouse will bite, and those bites cause infections requiring veterinary treatment. To get a snake onto frozen-thawed: thaw in warm water until room temperature, use feeding tongs, wiggle the prey to simulate movement. Most snakes accept frozen-thawed readily.
Feeding schedule: hatchlings every 5-7 days; juveniles every 7-10 days; adults every 10-14 days. Wait 48-72 hours after feeding before handling to prevent regurgitation. New snakes need 1-2 weeks of no handling to acclimate before regular contact begins.
Common Problems and Their Causes
Respiratory infection: Wheezing, clicking sounds, mucus around the mouth, open-mouth breathing. Primary cause: temperatures consistently too cold. Requires veterinary antibiotics -- injectable is standard because oral bioavailability is unpredictable in snakes.
Scale rot: Brown or black discoloration of belly scales, blistering. Caused by substrate staying wet, humidity too high, or contaminated bedding. Veterinary antibiotics required; fix the husbandry issue to prevent recurrence.
Mites: Tiny black or red dots moving on the snake's skin or in the water dish. Require treatment of the snake with a veterinary-recommended miticide, complete substrate replacement, and thorough enclosure cleaning.
Feeding refusal: The most common concern for new keepers. First rule out illness and incomplete shed. Then check temperatures (too cold = won't eat), then check prey size, then try a different prey presentation. Healthy snakes don't starve themselves when husbandry is correct.
Setup checklist before bringing a corn snake home: Enclosure secure (no gaps wider than the snake's head), thermal gradient confirmed with two thermometers, hide on each end, water dish that won't tip, thermostat on the heat source, and frozen mice in the freezer.
