How Morphs Work

A morph is a heritable change in pigmentation or pattern caused by a specific genetic mutation. Recessive morphs require two copies of the mutant allele (one from each parent) to show in the animal's appearance. Heterozygous carriers (one copy) look normal but pass the gene. When two carriers breed, statistically 25% of offspring will be visual morphs. Dominant morphs show with one copy; codominant morphs show differently depending on whether one or two copies are present.

Avoid purchasing from breeders who cannot name the specific genetics of the animal -- 'mixed morph' animals may carry unknown heterozygous genes that produce unexpected offspring.
